Will people really pay $800 for a SIM-unlocked iPhone 3G?

Will people really pay $800 for a SIM-unlocked iPhone 3G?

Summary: There are rumors of a new iPhone(s) coming in June around the time of the Apple WWDC and this seems to jive with the fact that you can now pick up a SIM-unlocked 16GB iPhone 3G for a low $799.99 from Buy.com. The iPhone is capable of software updates and will allow you to use it with AT&T or T-Mobile without any contract or rebate forms. I buy lots of phones from Buy.com, but $800 for an iPhone 3G is a bit out of my price range and really have to wonder how desparate Apple is to get rid of existing stock. If they were trying to dump stock I would think you could pick up an unlocked model for $600 or so with the AT&T subsidized ones running $200 and $300. This price seems a bit ridiculous to me, especially after I just recently found one on Howard Forums for $400. You can get them on ebay too for something like $500.

  • Sure they will.

Some people have more money than brains...especially when it comes to Apple products.

And yea...I own two iMacs & two iPods...so I guess I'm one of them...but I won't be partaking this "offer" any time soon. :D

There are a lot of Apple fanatics that will buy
whatever Steve Jobs says to buy. This being one of
    them.

Also there are a lot of people that just want to be
cool and will be "keep'n up with the joneses." So you
can bet they will spend it on a non-essential item.

  • Since

there is no "apple tax" this must be all value for
money. If Apple says so, an iPhone must definitely be
    worth $800.

    Apple tax is a myth.

The fool and his money are parted when the Apple product is purchased. Minutes later, the fool and his Apple product are parted when he puts it in his car! I guess that makes anyone who buys an Apple product a fool 2 times over! :)

        • Actually, I suspect it's being engineered by Steve Jobs....

With sales down 16% over the past year, he probably assumes that SOME people will probably go back and buy another one to replace the one that was stolen. So, if they can't increase their customer base, I guess their next best shot is to get customers to buy the same machine multiple times.

  • They will...

Unlocked WinMo devices frequently hit the $800 mark or above. With the high cost of Apple's other products; why wouldn't people spend $800 for a supported, unlocked iPhone?

Yes, this is what is keeping the greedy corporations afloat. Fools and their money are easily parted. We should all just do the same as we did with drugs... JUST SAY NO!! Then watch the prices fall. They only charge these outlandish prices because fools are willing to pay them, it's time to stop being manipulated by corporations and fashion houses and get back to buying what we want instead of what the style gurus say we need just because it has a name tag. This is the biggest single factor in the boom years which as we now know are bust.
