Windows Phone Mango update likely coming to AT&T folks on 27 September

Summary: Windows Phone 7 with the Mango update is my personal favorite mobile phone operating system and all indications are that the update is coming next week to most AT&T customers.

SHARE:

I am a major fan of the Windows Phone Mango update and have been rocking it on both my HTC HD7 and Dell Venue Pro for a few weeks. The folks over at WPCentral.com just posted some great news for most AT&T customers where the Mango update should start appearing on 27 September. AT&T was the premier launch partner for Windows Phone and look to be getting the update first in the US too.

HTC HD7S customers look to be getting the update in early to mid-October while Samsung Focus users will have to check their hardware build to see when they will get the update. Those with 1.3 hardware will start getting the update on 27 September while those with 1.4 hardware will likely not get it until the end of October.

We haven't yet heard when T-Mobile, Sprint, or Verizon will roll it out to their limited device selection, but with this news we can likely expect it in October with new devices also showing up in October. Since I am quite happy with what I have, especially since I updated both my devices to 32GB memory, I am likely holding out for a Nokia Windows Phone device.

  • How many Win7 phones have been sold?

Sold and activated by end users, not sold in to the channel.

      • I'm curious how big the ecosystem is.

@toddybottom ... Goodness, all the hatred.

Looks like I struck a nerve.

      • That's A Good One

@toddybottom I must remember that for future use: the next time someone asks how well Linux is doing, I will simply reply "Why do you care?". And they will look such fools!

      • Hatred?

        What are you talking about?

I'm just asking why you care.

        That isn't hatred.

        It is curiosity.

      • My company is releasing mobile computing apps

@toddybottom ... I work for a financial services company that is making a foray in to iPhone apps right now. Android is in the pipeline. There's talk about Blackberry although the plan isn't in place to do it.

So far nobody has suggested we do Windows Phone 7. If Windows Phone 7 had a large installed base, the case for releasing our app to it would be greater.

        That's why I care.

I'm really glad to hear this. The connector for Mac has been syncing well for me although an OS update will be a real test.

I am using developer beta2 on my Focus and HD7 since it has been released for us developers, and it rocks. I see room for improvements, but overall, it is definitely major revamp from original version of Windows Phone 7. Eagerly waiting for Official Mango Update.

How the heck did you update your HTC HD7 to have 32gb of storage? There isn't a microSD slot or any memory card slot for that matter! I have had an HTC HD7 since it was released. Please tell me how you did it so I can do the same to my phone.

Cool man! When i check out the omega, i might do this memory upgrade if it doesn't allow for expandable memory.

  • Big Mistake!

If it's true, that Mango is coming next week, it's a big mistake. Not because, it's faulty or not needed.

The mistake is that, nobody knows about it except the those that read about it in tech blogs or follow tech news in other places.

The people that matter, the regular consumer, doesn't know about it, and without them, Mango is doomed to fail. In fact, WP7 and NODO and Mango, are all basically, failures, because the marketing and hype necessary to get people excited is not there to accompany the product to market. In fact, the marketing, if it happens at the same time as the release to customers by AT&T, will be too late.

What the heck is the purpose for a product, no matter how good it is, if people don't know about it?
