Acer prepping first laptop using Nvidia's Tegra 2 chip, plus Intel Ultrabooks to revive flagging profits

Computer Goliath Acer stumbled in the second quarter, losing money and dropping from second to fourth place in global PC sales. As part of its hoped-for return to profitability for the rest of 2011, the company is working on a couple of new ideas for the notebook market.

According to DigiTimes, Acer is planning to release the first laptop that will be powered by Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor, which has been mostly used in tablet PCs running Android. There are no specific details about this system, but it could be announced as soon as this week, so we might not have to wait long to find out what Acer has in mind.

In addition, it looks like the company has taken up Intel's generous offer to get notebook makers to create lappies based on its Ultrabook platform. It will be a little late to the game, however, as its first Ultrabooks won't hit the market until December, which should be a few months after Asus and HP have their Ultrabooks for sale.
