CES: The weird world of Windows tablets

Summary: Computer companies aren't quite sure what to make of Windows on tablets at this stage. One of the clearest signs of this confusion is the sheer variety of concepts on display at CES this week.

The theme of this year's Consumer Electronics Show, nearly everyone agrees, is tablets. But after all the speeches and demos, Microsoft's strategy for breaking into this rapidly-growing market is as much a mystery as ever.

In his keynote, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said Windows had the "flexibility" to work well on these emerging devices, but he focused more on Windows Phone 7 smartphones and other current consumer products. The company's announcement that the "next version of Windows" will run on ARM SoCs from Nvidia, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments should push Windows onto more tablets, but this is a longer-term solution, and despite some proof-of-concept demos Microsoft hasn't discussed the interface or features of Windows 8.

That left Intel execs grumbling that its partner waited too long to develop a version of Windows optimized for tablets. And PC companies aren't quite sure what to make of Windows on tablets at this stage. One of the clearest signs of this confusion is the sheer variety of concepts on display at CES this week.

One of the more promising Windows tablet designs unveiled at CES is Sliding PC 7 Series. The PC 7 looks like a slate tablet but the display slides backwards and tilts up to become a netbook with a full-size keyboard. The company's laptop designers said that they chose this design because Samsung has a lot of expertise with (and intellectual property surrounding) this type of hinge from its work designing phones. It also has the benefit of making the PC 7, at slightly more than 2 pounds, thinner and lighter than competing convertible tablets such as Dell's Inspiron Duo. The PC 7 will have a 10.1-inch (1366-by-768) multi-touch display, upcoming Intel Atom Z-series (aka Oak Trail) processor, a 32 or 64GB solid-state disk drive and Windows 7. In its press release, Samsung said the PC 7 will get up to eight hours of battery life, though Samsung execs said it would be more like six to seven hours when watching a movie. When it is in the slate mode, the PC 7 has a user interface and applications for music, video, photos, note-taking, and more optimized for touch. I had a few minutes to try out the PC 7 in both slate and netbook modes, and. Samsung hasn't announced the pricing, but other sites have reported that it start at around $700.

Asus also announced a model with a sliding keyboard, the Eee Pad Slider, but it uses a different hinge and is based on an Nvidia Tegra 2 SoC and the upcoming Honeycomb version of Google's Android OS. The company's Windows play is the Eee Slate EP121, a slate that has the hardware specs of an ultraportable laptop including a 12.1-inch display (1,280 by 800 pixels), 1.3GHz Core i5-470UM dual-core processor and Windows 7. The EP121 uses Wacom's Duo-Sense capacitive screen which works with either touch input or a stylus. It will include up to 4GB of memory, a 32- or 64GB SSD, WiFi and Bluetooth, two USB ports and mini-HDMI. There's no hidden keyboard, but the Eee Slate EP121 will come with a separate Bluetooth keyboard. Asus has not announced details on pricing or availability.

Lenovo's IdeaPad U1 hybrid functions as a standard Windows laptop when the display is attached to the base. But when you detach the display, it becomes the LePad Slate, a tablet based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor and Android 2.2. The IdeaPad U1 weighs just under four pounds and has a 1.2GHz Core i5-540UM processor, 2GB of memory, a 320GB hard drive, WiFi and Bluetooth, and Windows 7. The 10.1-inch LePad, which will also be sold separately, measures 0.5 inches thick and weighs less than two pounds. It includes 3G wireless WAN as well. Like most Android-based slates, the LePad includes its own user interface dubbed "LeOS," and a set of tablet apps. Lenovo will also offer a Keyboard Dock to use the LePad Slate like a laptop, though obviously without Windows. The IdeaPad U1 hybrid and LePad will ship first in China, though a Lenovo spokesperson said it will also be available in other markets later this year.

Finally, there's Acer's Iconia, which depending how you look at it is either a laptop with a novel on-screen keyboard or a dual-screen tablet along the lines of the Kno Tablet (which was also on display at CES). Acer first previewed the Iconia late last year, but at CES I got a look at it along with several other prototype Iconia-branded tablets of different sizes, most of which will use Android. The Iconia's dual 14-inch multi-touch displays can both be used to display content, but by placing all 10 fingers on the lower half, you can convert one display into a virtual keyboard. Despite its novel design, the Iconia has the specs of a mainstream laptop including a Core i5 processor, up to 4GB of memory, hard drive sin capacities of up to 750GB hard drive, Windows 7 and all the standard ports. Typing isn't as easy as it is on a physical keyboard, of course, but it also isn't as difficult as I had expected. The big question is how to develop applications that really take advantage of this dual-display format. Acer has not announced pricing yet, but the company plans to ship it in limited quantities specifically for early adopters who are intrigued by the concept.

One of the reasons that PC companies are experimenting with convertible tablets for Windows is that they simply do not believe that Windows slates are ready to compete head-to-head the iPad and Android tablets. Perhaps the biggest issue is the lack of a Windows 7 app store and a good selection of apps truly customized for touch input.

As a result, tablets seem to be developing along two distinct lines. The ARM-Android tablets have smaller displays (7 to 10 inches), include 3G or 4G wireless, and are geared toward consumers. The x86-Windows tablets tend to have larger displays (10 to 14 inches), typically rely on wireless LAN only, include keyboard options and are designed more as productivity tools for business as well as consumer use. This makes sense: the Android tablets are scaled-up smartphones while this first wave of Windows tablets are more an extension of the convertibles that PC companies have been experimenting with for years.

Whether any of these new concepts will have more luck than previous Windows slates and convertible tablets remains to be seen.

  • Hey, they MIGHT be able to sell a few Windows 7 tablets in verticals, and,

    there ARE quite a few Windows dildos that will buy one. Hey, MAYBE say 5,000 or so in total.

      Which it sounds as though that thought bothers you very deeply.
      The fact that you must resort to calling those that prefer Windows over crippled devices that you support "dildos" is a clear indication that you are greatly upset that manufacturers see a market for Windows.

      Add to the the "Ho-Hum" attitude towards Android tablets and Honeycomb is also an attitude that is adding to your discomfort.

      All signs of Google's continuing irrelevance in the marketplace.

      • Well, ChromeOS will probably not even be used on tablets. so, outselling

        ChormeOS on tablets is not saying much. On the other hand, look at all of the excitement around Android on tablets vs Windows 7 on tablets. There are probably 5x tablets being announced with Android vs Windows 7, so, Manufacturers may be testing the Windows 7 tablet waters, but, they are going with Android, NOT Windows 7 on tablets.<br><br>So, given the numbers, NO discomfort at all for Android / Google. Of course Apple / iPad is also looking VERY good.<br><br>A big collective thumbs down for Windows 7 tablets, and a lot of discomfort for Windows dildos.

      @DonnieBoy - When another tablet OS can flawlessly run existing database-driven, enterprise-class applications, and connect to a Microsoft Active Directory domain controller (yes, most medium and large businesses -- that are actually in business to make money -- run and manage a Windows-based network), then maybe your comment would have a chance. Until then, any other tablet is just a remote terminal to reach business applications that are running on a Microsoft Windows OS.

      Hundreds of thousands of software designers are just aching to have a Windows-based tablet to target with their business software, side-stepping the irritating notion of having to embrace a mobile-class tablet and re-write proven and stable proprietary software to run on it.

        @BitSmacker You must hang with a different crew of developers than the ones I know. Very few of the ones I know are even interested in Windows tablets given the effort most of them see being required to rewrite their mouse & keyboard centric interface to a multitouch interface and what they see as a miniscule market for Windows tablets for at least the next 4 years making the chance of any return on investment unlikely. What I've seen as the biggest trend in corporate software development is moving towards web-based standards driven interfaces connecting to the back end. Much like the old Java promise of "write once, run anywheres", the web based apps are designed to work with almost any device that has an SSL capable browser making the underlying OS pretty much irrelevant.

        I'm also tempted to ask how it is that if those "hundreds of thousands of software designers" you state "are just aching to have a Windows based tablet" were actually interested in purchasing a Windows tablet, why it is that the sales of Windows tablets have been almost invisible for the last decade.

    @NonZealot I think all new tablet PCs are being pitted against the iPad, because said iPad currently commands some +90% of the worlds tablet market. That IS the tablet they will have to compete with.

      When (if) Oracle releases the next version of Solaris, will it have to compete against iOS and Android? Of course not. Solaris and iOS are both OSs just like the iPad and the Windows 7 tablets both have touch screens just like the Honda Civic and the Ford F150 both have 4 wheels and a combustion engine. But if you want a server OS, you don't look at iOS, you look at Solaris. If you want a fuel efficient grocer getter, you look at a Honda Civic and not a Ford F150. If you want a tablet that can actually be used to do useful computing, you look at a Windows 7 tablet and not an iPad.

      And this is where you aren't being accurate. iPad currently commands some large percentage of the market for portable web browsers that have touch screens larger than 5". Windows tablets currently command some large percentage of the market for portable computers that have touch screens larger than 5". They don't compete any more than the Ford F150 competes with the Honda Civic or Solaris competes with iOS.

      What NonZealot is saying that even though the form factor is the same, the underlying capabilities are not: they serve two totally different functions. A Windows tablet need not outsell the iPad to fullfil the capabilities in which it was designed and purchased for.

      By your logic, the Mac line of computers running OS X must outsell Windows based PC's to be labeled a success, since that is what it is competing against, correct?

      Sure, there may be some little niches that require Win32, but, we have seen about zero sales of Windows tablets in those niches compared to iPad. The issue here, is that if you want to sell in any volume, in other words to the masses, you will be competing head on with iPad.<br><br>In your weird OSX example, OSX competes DIRECTLY with Windows for the SAME function. Apple went right after Microsoft Windows. Microsoft should go right after Apple in the tablet market. Windows propeller heads do NOT a market make.

      Is the Mac line of computers a failure as it has nowhere close to the market share that Windows based PC's enjoys? A simple yes or no will suffice.

      I think NZ is right in that they are different categories of devices. When we say Windows-tablet what are talking about in most cases is merely a quasi- laptop-type-thing with touchscreen capability; not the streamlined device with a dedicated touch OS like the iPad.

      And there is nothing wrong with making a portable, full PC enabled touch screen and I don't think anyone really thinks the idea itself is bad (in theory). It's just that it will never achieve widespread success- at least not in any iteration we have seen so far.

      Maybe MS has something up it's sleeve that will blow us all away. If so, good for them, but if they are, they are playing it really close to the chest because from here it looks like they have zero idea how to make it successful.

It is amazing that anybody would say something so STUPID as that MS somehow does not want to sell any of the types of tablets that Apple makes that are selling in the MILLIONS. How freaking STUPID can you get.

    There are two competing visions here. To use
    1) Apple vision, where we have 18 wheelers (Mac Pro) Ford F-150's (iMac or MacBook Pro) passenger cars (iPad)

    2) Microsoft Vision, flying car (Surface), everything else (Windows desktops, laptops, tablets).

    So far based on public adoption and other competitors adopting the Apple vision, I'd say Apple got it right.....again.

    As long as a tablet weather it be Android, WebOS, Black Berry, iOS or Windows 7 makes it's manufacturer money it is a success. Market share is NOT the end all to be all as Apple has proven time and again with the Macintosh and its success for Apple. Making money IS the end all to be all for everyone who sells a product and that is the measure we should all take into account. Popularity is nice, don't get me wrong but it is NOT killer. PROFIT is king no matter how many or how few one sells.

    Completely agree ! Great example. One additional thing that no one is discussing about is that MS will most likely have different UIs in different devices to adapt to its user case. So having the maturity of an underlying Windows architecture running under the hood in many devices, with adapted UIs might be a great thing for the health of the ecossystem. Better standards, better compatibility etc.
