Intel’s latest six-core processor, the Core i7-990X Extreme Edition, hasn’t been officially unveiled by the chip giant yet, but gaming PC builder Origin PC has just announced the new CPU’s availability in its Genesis desktop as well as its Eon-17 gaming laptop.

The i7-990X, no doubt the fastest desktop processor (as were its six-core predecessors), has a base clock speed of 3.46GHz, but Origin has overclocked the chip to 4.6GHz using liquid cooling. Expect to tack on around $1,000 to the price of the Genesis or Eon system to get your hand on Intel’s latest and greatest.

Origin will no doubt be the first of many PC manufacturers that will build systems with the new six-core champion, the final one from the Gulftown family, so we’ll keep you posted with other announcements as they become available.

i7 6 core 3.46ghz - $1000
phenom x6 3.3ghz with 3.7ghz turbo core - $240

with those clock speeds and six cores the you wouldn't even able to tell the difference

Yeah, right.....

@nickloss The phenom x6 wasn't even able to beat the best 4 core Intel chips. Now, the Intel has two more cores and you think there won't be a noticeable difference? Seriously? You get what you pay for.

Sorry bud, but you're wrong...

@nickloss The Core i7-800 and i7-900 quad cores are both faster than a Phenom II x6 in the clock vs clock category in everything but WinRAR. the i7-900 hexacore blows any single processor solution from AMD out of the water. While AMD might be a value leader when it comes to bragging rights, Intel took the performance lead with Conroe and hasn't let go since.
