Salesforce to Acquire Radian6 - The Uber Moves continue

For the last several months, there has been a rumor, always denied that salesforce.com was going to acquire Radian6. In my direct conversations with various people, I was told it wasn’t the case. But today, it is now the case.  And it is a blockbuster move on behalf of both parties. Needless to say with what Radian6 is doing, their future game plan and the holes that salesforce.com had, this is going to accelerate salesforce.com’s leadership in the social and socialCRM and platform space. Its a not-unexpected but still stunning move for each party and one, if the cultures mesh, will potentially change the dynamics of at least the social and SCRM markets, if note even more.

But there is a question mark….and that is the difference in the cultures. I’m intimately acquainted with both - and, despite the fact that “coolness” applies to each company, their cultures are very, very different and Radian6, which is in the process of growing up as a young, market-making company with a young culture is being merged with another market marking culture that’s become let’s just say, infinitely more corporate in its approach to internal life in the last few years, as it must, given its rate and level of growth. Equally cool cultures don’t mean the same one. I can think of highly specific aspects of things that go on at each company down to individuals that don’t quite mesh. However, I will leave that to private discussions with the individuals. I’m not going to be public about it.

However, if that hurdle is overcome and I am confident, with the usual caveats that come along with it, that it will be, this will reshape salesforce.com, already a force to be reckoned with, as an even greater force to be reckoned with, and will impact salesforce.com products such as Chatter as something that can be more externally focused with far more robust information about whatever it is that matters to the Chatter user.

I’m curious as to how Radian6 will function - will it be absorbed or independent?  I don’t know and I’ll spend some time to find out much more and report much more here in the next few days and weeks.

This is big stuff, far more interesting than the $276 million cash and $50 million stock that salesforce paid for Radian6. This deal has a lot of potential and adds what was a major missing piece for salesforce.com (though I wouldn’t call it solving a weakness).  It will make a difference.

In addition to being the author of the best-selling CRM at the Speed of Light: Social CRM Strategies, Tools, and Techniques for Engaging Your Customers" Paul Greenberg is President of The 56 Group, LLC, a customer strategy consulting firm, focused on cutting edge CRM strategic services and a founding partner of the CRM training company, BPT Partners, LLC, a training and consulting venture composed of a number of CRM luminaries that has quickly become the authority for the CRM industry.

His book, CRM at the Speed of Light: Essential Customer Strategies for the 21st Century, now in its fourth edition, is in 8 languages and been called "the bible of the CRM industry". It is used by more than 70 universities as a primary text. It was named "the number 1 CRM book" by SearchCRM.com in 2002 and is one of two books recommended by CustomerThink. The Asian edition of CIO Magazine named it one of the 12 most important books an Asian CEO will ever read. Paul has also authored two other books including "E-Government for Public Officials" (Thompson Publishing, 2003).

Paul is also the Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management CRM Centre of Excellence, and the Executive Vice President of the CRM Association.

Paul is considered a thought leader in CRM, having been published in numerous industry and business publications over the years and having traveled the world speaking on cutting edge CRM and topics geared to the contemporary social customer. He has been called "the godfather of CRM", the "Walt Whitman of CRM" and even "the Bob Dylan of CRM" by analysts and organizations throughout the industry. He is known particularly for his work on the use of social media, such as blogs, podcasts and wikis and social networks/communities in CRM as tools and channels for customer collaboration with a company. He is seen often as the "voice of the customer" and is well known within the CRM industry for this work. His blog, PGreenblog has been named the #1 CRM blog every year from 2005-2010 by all industry award providers. He also has a podcast, Experience on the Edge, that has garnered a myriad of industry kudos and his collaboration with Brent Leary on the always funny, often cutting, CRM Playaz" is the most popular broadcast in the CRM world.

Paul was also named one of the most influential people in CRM by CRM Magazine in August 2008. In 2010, he was inducted into CRM Magazine's CRM Hall of Fame.

He is a member of the Destination CRM Board of Experts and the SearchCRM Expert Advisory Panel as well as a member of the Board of Advisors for GreaterChinaCRM for many years. He also sits on the Board of Advisors of the CIE Institute and and multiple other companies.

Wow this is indeed big news in the SCRM sphere. Our company just moved to both of these platforms. With the usual caveats you mention Paul, I will keep my fingers crossed that the integration of the two companies and their tools results in an even greater synergy. Time will tell - thanks for keeping us updated and look forward to future posts on the subject.

I think the highest level story is not the specifics of the purchase (Congrats Radian6!) and at what price, but that this deal endorses the growth, value and importance of this emerging category. One can argue about whether the "social market" is overhyped, but the reality is that listening to the new social customer, as well as finding a way to engage and generate results in a scalable ways--well, that can no longer be ignored if you are an enterprise who is interested in serving your customer.
