Back to School Guide 2010: Five camcorders for the student crowd

By | August 3, 2010, 5:30am PDT

Summary: Here are five camcorders to consider for the student crowd all under the $300 mark.

Now that it is August, it’s time to start thinking about what gadgets to bring back to school. While a computer is necessary for work, everyone needs something to capture the memories, and a camcorder is a useful tool to do just that.

While many point-and-shoot cameras and smartphones come with video recording support (sometimes in HD), there are plenty of other recording devices available for some higher quality clips and easy uploading features to YouTube and Facebook.

Here are five camcorders to consider for the student crowd all under the $300 mark.

Because we all know every student must have a video camera for school....
@co-eddy Yeah, no kidding. This is really not what I would be thinking about buying my kids so close to a recession.
Maybe students should be studying and reading instead of playing wit their phones, computers, and camcorders.....
Hm, apparently these guys taking cheap shots at this article didn't go to college, or went to college a LONG time ago, because we have 4 kids in college right now and they definitely like recording lectures.

Rachel,

I would have liked to have seen you mention the Zoom Q3. It is the darling of musicians because of its very high quality sound, which makes it a good classroom camcorder as well.

Also, the Kodak Zi8 should have been mentioned. It's my kids' favorite pocket camcorder because of its portability, image stabilization, video quality, and sound quality with an external mic. It stores to an SD card, so they can keep a card for each class and review lessons without a lot of time burned in video editing.

Cheers!
@Tom007 Oh, I should have mentioned the HDMI port as well. That's being considered a must now, as they prefer to watch the video on HD TVs whenever possible.

What about the Sanyo Xacti line?
tr7oy 31st Aug 2010
Sanyo makes an extensive line of budget-priced HD camcorders in their Xacti line, such as the Sanyo VPC-GH2 (my most current one) which costs around $200, does 1080p at 30fps and 1080i at 60fps and up to 14MP photos. For the price and features, I think it's hard to beat and it's very compact. I'm surprised not a single one of Sanyo's cameras made it into this "guide."
