Facebook now supports uploading of high resolution photos

Summary: Sharing photos on Facebook is simple and useful (sometimes), but the resolution is almost always dumbed down, destroying the quality of the image in the process. But that's not the case anymore.

Sharing photos on Facebook is simple and useful (sometimes), but the resolution is almost always dumbed down, destroying the quality of the image in the process. But that's not the case anymore.

Previously FB users would upload photos, and the resolution would be refitted to a maximum of 720 pixels. Not that great, which is one of the reasons I mostly share anything worth sharing on Flickr.

Facebook appears to have paid more attention one of its most popular features, boosting the max resoultion to a whopping 2,048 pixels. That almost makes me want to go back and re-upload everything I had already shared on the social networking site.

This also happens to conveniently coincide with the release of The Social Network today, so perhaps Facebook is trying to appease its 500 million+ followers? Even if they're not, I'm more than happy to see this improvement.

  • Future auto-face-tagging and search needs higher res

I'm sure they have future plans which required higher resolution images to have any chance of working. Things like automatic face-tagging and face search would both benefit from higher resolution. Offering services to buy prints of these higher resolution online photos could be a source of future revenue for them. Facebook wants to be your ONLY social network site so they'll keep adding services that keep you from using other sites. They don't want people to need Flickr, Picasa, or PhotoBucket because if you need to go to those sites, you leave Facebook, which hurts their revenues. There are lots of business reasons why this is a good decision.

@jred - I like what @BillDem had to say, but dread the implications if true.

@BillDem face-tagging needs to be customizable i.e. I choose the size of the square

  • Flickr Killer?

Yet another popular service supporting High Resolution images makes Flickr's monthly bandwidth restriction for free members look outdated, they will have to up their game to stay relevant.

Hmm. I just uploaded a 1000-pixel-wide image. FB cut it down to 720. So perhaps this has not happened yet for all FB users.

Also: besides limiting resolution, FB has always applied extra JPG compression to images, rather radically, which especially destroys color gamut. Don't think they'll change that aspect, but my mind's open ...

  • Say What?

You know stand alone phrases like "720 pixels" or "2048 pixels" are meaningless without context. Pixels per inch? Pixels wide? Pixels tall?

I think what has been overlooked here is that though the final image in the Photo Album still remains small, there's a link below right to click "Download in High Resolution" for users that prefer to save the image. Not sure that I like this as I would prefer the image be displayed in High Res. I don't want to always have to Download an image just to look at it.
