Summary: After some details and photos leaked online last week, Leica has come clean and officially introduced the company’s first compact superzoom camera: the V-Lux 20.

After some details and photos leaked online last week, Leica has come clean and officially introduced the company’s first compact superzoom camera: the V-Lux 20.

The 12.1-megapixel V-Lux 20 includes a lot within that compact, matte-finish frame, including a Leica DC-VARIO-ELMAR 4.1-49.2mm f/3.3-4.9 ASPH zoom lens with 12x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. It’s also ready for the road with integrated GPS tagging that can tag 500,000 places in 73 countries.

Photographers can also record HD videos up to 720p at 60fps as Motion JPEGs. Conveniently, video mode still allows for some of the preset still features, including face recognition, automatic scene modes and smart exposure.

Other notable specs on the V-Lux 20 include:

  • 3-inch TFT LCD display
  • 1/2.33-inch CCD sensor
  • 11-point AF
  • ISO up to 1600
  • SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot
  • Connectivity: USB 2.0 hi-speed, mini-HDMI, AV output, DC input
  • Rechargeable Li-ion battery

Pricing still seems to be a debatable point. Leica is releasing the V-Lux 20 in the UK first for £495 ($761). There’s no note on when it will be released in the United States and for what price, as it’s not always relative. Leica Rumors had predicted the U.S. price point would be $599, but again, we’ll have to wait and see until it’s released stateside.

If all you are looking for is a Leica brand camera, then this is a deal. But as far as specs go, you can get the same product for less money by picking up the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7.

[UPDATE 04/23/10: A Leica representative has informed me that the US price will be $699 and the leather case will retail for $175.]

  • Overpriced!
This is ridiculous. This camera is no better or worse than any other similar model by Canon or Nikon, which is hundreds less. But, I guess if you like names or money is no object, so be it.

i agree.. way too much money... if you want to spend that much.. look at the panasonic LX3... it is "just" bigger/thicker than this leica but still pocketable and you get all the manual control of a higher end camera... and the LX3 is still less....

I give up, where can I get a good camera with an eyepiece
viewer? Don't care what anyone says, LCD screens are just
not bright enough for al conditions and they play havoc
    if you wear varifocals.

  • RE: Leica gets official with V-Lux 20 compact digital camera
Leica has become a kind of lens manufacturer really along with
the specialty equipment such as microscopes and binoculars
and whatnot. When I was a kid I hankered after a rangefinder
model but of course it was astronomically priced. It still is but I
no longer have any interest in a retro engineered camera. I
want one that I can actually use and that delivers exemplary
high res images. This model is a tourist thing at a high price.
For not much more the average person could get a fine
Canon/Nikon/Pentax/Sony Dslr and for the price of a Leica M
series..The WORLD...They ought to just throw in the towel and
make fine optics for the above cameras but with Auto
Focus..oh, right they have not discovered yet how to do that at
    Leitz...all's the pity...

  • What???
The amount of nonsense you just spewed in this rant is amazing! Your comments include things that are not even remotely relevant to the subject of the original article, which is about an autofocus Leica compact camera. I don't know where to begin, but let's start with your ending comment about Leica?s inability to ?discover? autofocus.

Leica patented an autofocus system (as did Honeywell) before the first AF cameras were introduced. Leica did not implement it on their rangefinder cameras because they did not have a need to - their customers bought the RF cameras because they WANTED an RF camera! Leica wisely chose to license their AF technology. The rangefinder system was so good it remains much as it was a half century ago with only minor technological updates. Many advanced amateurs and professionals trust the RF over AF systems and have no problems focusing under extremely poor light. It certainly does better under adverse conditions than the high-end SLR cameras you mentioned and is not dependant on the maximum aperture of the lens in use.

You chastise the company for being technologically backward. Leica made a high-end 26.4 megapixel professional digital camera with interchangeable lenses over a dozen years ago.
More recently, Leica had an SLR digital back that attached to their 35mm R8 and R9 SLR film cameras, and the owner could switch between film, digital, and back again in minutes. How many camera makers give you that flexibility in the 35mm body format?

Their latest pro-level camera is the S2 - a 37.5mp camera that uses a larger than 35mm sensor, but the body is comparable to Nikon's DX3 (35mm). Incidentally, the S2 also offers AF?

Off the cuff comments without facts to back them up only hurt the company being slammed without reason.

I won't go into the differences in Leica glass vs. other brands, but I will say as an owner of pro lenses from Nikon, Zeiss, Schneider, Rodenstock, Pentax, among others, Leica's optics are at the top of the game. It is to Panasonic's credit they chose to partner with Leica for their optical prowess.

There are no perfect cameras, any one can do something better than another in the professional range, but then you threw even the Leica digital M into your rant, which really was baseless and irrelevant to the original article and your initial rant.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Leica in any capacity, but have used their equipment for over 40 years alongside the above-mentioned systems...

  • Nonsense!
Panasonic has a line of cameras that use Leica optics. What idiot would buy this and pay for the "Leica" label on the body?

Huge point for me: Can you zoom while recording video, and do the zoom-motor noises get recorded loudly in the video?

How can you compare to the Panasonic camera?
Way too simple for the comparison!
Have you ever seen the P90 or the newer P100 from Nikon?
    With a x24 optical, shake and face recon , coupled with a timed sequencing that allows for shoot a bud-to-bloom flower shot, plus video and ASA6200 +, + ,+ . . . .

  • Acquired taste
Owning a Leica is an acquired taste. First acquire money and then the Leica. Seriously, My 1950s era Leica M3 rangefinder was the best camera I ever used, if you can afford the Leitz lenses to go with it, and are satisfied to not need a longer lens than 135mm.You also had to slow down and take a manual light reading which usually gave better results than TTL reading on a SLR. It was a sad day when I sold my Leica system.

I still have my 1960s era Leica M4M and still use it. It is the easiest camera to focus I have ever used. The shutter is extremely quiet (useful when photographing animals). My 35mm, 50mm, & 90mm lens have gave me good service for nearly 50 years now. You buy a Leica for the quality they build in and you get what you pay for.
