Olympus PEN series will be expanded with high-end models; E-620 staying put

Summary: Olympus might be besotted by its PEN interchangeable lens camera series, but that doesn't mean it will erase all of its digital SLR models from the face of the planet. At least not yet.

Olympus might be besotted by its PEN interchangeable lens camera series, but that doesn't mean it will erase all of its digital SLR models from the face of the planet. At least not yet.

According to Fotopolis via Photo Rumors, Olympus is planning to hold onto the E-620, specifically, nor other higher-end digital SLRs. Low-end models can consider themselves erased entirely thanks to the PEN collection. Olympus SLR planning department manager Toshiyuki Terada does tell Fotopolis, however, that there eventually won't be an Olympus SLR at all...but that won't be in the foreseeable future just yet.

But PEN won't be for intended primarily for semi-professional and amateur photographers for long as there are plans to expand the series with some high-end micro four thirds cameras. There isn't a timeline for any of this yet, but it looks like we'll have something to look forward to from Olympus.

  • Olympus doesn't make professional SLRs...

I don't know if there will ever be a truly high end 4/3 or micro 4/3 system. Sure they take nice pictures, but I think the lack of a full frame sensor is what kills them in the actual professional market. The 4/3 sensor has a 2x crop factor, meaning it's about half the size of a full-frame 35mm sensor, making it difficult to make ultra-wide and wide-angle lenses for it.

That being said, I think Olympus and Panasonic have a definite niche market for consumer SLRs and the non-SLR interchangable 4/3 cameras. The only real reason to shoot a 2x crop sensor would be to double your effective focal length without using a teleconverter... So a 200mm telephoto becomes a 400mm; which I could see being a selling point for specialized applications, like wildlife photography.
