Sony is truly jumping on board with industry-standard memory cards with the introduction of a trio of SDHC ranges.

Obviously not all Sony digital imaging devices will be compatible with these new SD cards. Offered as options for digital SLRs, a Sony Handycam or an Alpha NEX interchangeable lens camera, here are the cards we can expect soon:

  • Class 4 Essential Series (up to 4MB/s): 2, 4, and 8GB capacities
  • Class 4 Experience Series (up to 15MB/s): 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32GB capacities
  • Class 10 Expert Series (up to 20MB/s): 8, 16, and 32GB capacities

Apparently Sony’s change of heart from the Memory Stick-only development reflects “the needs of today’s digital imaging customers.”

All of these cards are expected to roll out in January.

Surely, If they are releasing a 'Class 4' with UP TO 4MB/s, then its a bit odd. as the standard 'Class 4' has a MINIMUM speed of 4MB/s

It's about time Sony adopted SD. They have been on my "do not consider" list for several years due to their Memory Stick technology.

It's all funny numbers. "Up to" followed by a big number, one above its class, generally means that the big number is read speed - a characteristic that most photographers don't care about. And it may be a burst speed rather than a sustained speed.

The makers usually don't say much about write speed as it's often lower.

The class, for those new to this, is determined by sustained write/read speeds. And that's why a class 4 card may be advertised as "up to 15 MBps" when the class requires only a minimum of 4 MBps - sustained speed in both directions.

Sandisk used to be good about this - their older cards, Ultra II and Extreme III, showed about the same speed in both directions and much faster than the class would suggest. But consumers chased lowest price and Sandisk couldn't afford to build to that quality any more.

There's a lesson there somewhere.

Someone should tell Sony that the world has moved to MicroSD, LOL. To be fair, my Sony a300 DSLR uses a CF card.

Lol too bad many things take micro SD only. But to be fair they are targeting cameras which are usually SD.

Hopefully Sony has leaned its lesson and will start supporting other open and industry standards. I refuse to buy Sony because of its Apple-like approach to technology. Of course, Apple also sucks.
