Sony’s recently released Alpha NEX-5 and NEX-3 interchangeable lens digital cameras are already getting a firmware update, and this one includes a nifty feature: 3D Sweep Panorama mode.

Previously, there was only 2D panorama mode available on these compact shooters. With this special preset selected, all users need to do is press the shutter button, sway the camera from one side to another while the NEX-series camera shoots a hi-speed burst of frames that automatically sync together to form a panoramic image.

But if you want to see the image in full three-dimensional form, you’ll have to connect the camera to a 3D TV.

The other firmware upgrades aren’t quite as exciting, focusing on less power drainage and quicker start-up times. Owners of these cameras can download the firmware update directly from Sony’s website.
