Adobe Gets Into Electronic Signatures

By Doc | September 19, 2011, 6:52am PDT

Summary: Adobe plans to add EchoSign’s electronic signature technology to its document exchange services platform, to reduce the time, cost, and complexity associated with getting a document signed.

Doc has, shall we say, a lot of legal issues, and when someone actually tracks me down I often end up having to sign a bunch of documents. So, I’ve been checking out several of the electronic-signature options in the marketplace. One, Echo Sign, was recently purchased by Adobe systems and, so, is likely to become a new standard.

Adobe plans to add EchoSign’s electronic signature technology to its document exchange services platform, to reduce the time, cost, and complexity associated with getting a document signed.

The EchoSign technology, which is currently used by over 3 million people worldwide, will be integrated with other Adobe document services including SendNow for managed file transfer, FormsCentral for form creation, and CreatePDF for online PDF creation.

So what’s the value of electronic signatures? According to Adobe, FedEx rakes in over $1.6 billion in overnight envelopes, much of it containing documents for signing. So the market for secure and verifiable electronic signatures could be large.

Now if someone could just figure out a way to take electronic depositions, Doc would be in much better shape.

Doc

ZDNet introduces Doc (The DocuMentor), sponsored by RICOH. Through his blog, Doc will educate you about Document Management. So who is Doc? Doc is something of an enigma. He was born to a Russian ballerina and a German electrical engineer who some believe was running covert operations for shadowy corporate interests. Doc grew up in various locations in the United States, although no one seems to know precisely where, least of all Doc. His early schooling was unremarkable except for the time he was caught trying to replace all the mimeograph machines with high-tech color copiers that had mysteriously disappeared from a shipment to Albania. At MIT, he made a name for himself by transforming a large printer into a robot that hunts and eats Roombas. Professionally, he reportedly has seen the insides of more brands, versions, and generations of printer and printer-related hardware than almost anyone. Some say his obsession with paper, printing, and mechanical movement was either started by, or evidenced by, a traumatic childhood episode when he crawled inside an old Xerox 2400 and tried to print himself.

Anyway, Doc has hands on experience with stuff like printer maintenance and fleet management, but his mastery of document management leaves no stone unturned. Important issues like sustainability, security, and regulatory compliance are top of mind for Doc, as are other business technology needs like networking and IT services, making him a true blue IT renaissance man.

@Jadsen Thanks for the tip on rightsignature.com. Looks like a great full-service e-signature solution that meets all the legal requirements of e-signatures and even offers an audit log and signature certificate should it be necessary in a court of law.

Our business started Echo Sign about 3 months ago and love it, our client's love the ease to which they can return documents back to us. The service is used for sending out Engagement Letters, Signing off on Business Activity Statements (GST returns) all of which are loaded into our document storage dashboard emailed to clients and are able to track when signed off and returned - an added advantage is have the ability to send out reminders for non return of documents. Thanks Echo Sign - Love Ya Work.
