Summary: Read a profile of Print Audit’s president John MacInnes.

Doc has been fascinated by the series “Get to Know” over at MPSConnect.  Many of the industry’s leading players have been profiled. And now we can get to know John MacInnes, president of Print Audit, the leading software provider for the MPS industry.

Q.        When did you start Print Audit?
A.         Print Audit was founded in the basement of my house in 1999.  We squeezed in 8 people before we moved to bigger digs.  Since then we have moved 4 times due to growth.  Pretty cool, but it has taken some considerable negotiation with landlords to let us out of leases early.

Q.        How has the company changed since you started it?
A.         Print Audit started as a company that focused on helping Law and Architect firms to charge their customers for printing.
Things have changed!  Now we mainly help office equipment dealers and their customers to be print management experts.  We help hundreds of dealers to remotely monitor their MIF (Machines In Field) for page counts, supplies and service alerts.  We also help them to gain a huge advantage by offering their customers print management tools like user management, assessment, rules, and cost recovery.  All of these are now offered in our customer’s MPS toolkits.

Q.        Did Print Audit have an MPS focus prior to your joining, or did you have some influence on their current MPS position?
A.         I feel that I have had a major influence in Print Audit’s direction.  The rest of the Print Audit team may disagree.

Q.        How are you currently involved with Print Audit’s MPS focus?
A.         MPS has changed much of the way that we think about our products and pricing.  It has shown us a great path towards a significant recurring revenue stream for our dealers and for us.  Over the next few years all of our products and pricing will be geared towards making sure our dealers are successful MPS providers.

Q.        How do you think you and Print Audit influence the MPS community?
A.         We push the MPS business model as hard as we can because we believe it will help our customers to remain or become successful.

We are very proud that our relentless focus on MPS led us to win the MPS Leadership Award from the Managed Print Services Association.

There’s more of the interview, including John’s thoughts on the future of MPS. Worth a look, says Doc.

Doc

ZDNet introduces Doc (The DocuMentor), sponsored by RICOH. Through his blog, Doc will educate you about Document Management. So who is Doc? Doc is something of an enigma. He was born to a Russian ballerina and a German electrical engineer who some believe was running covert operations for shadowy corporate interests. Doc grew up in various locations in the United States, although no one seems to know precisely where, least of all Doc. His early schooling was unremarkable except for the time he was caught trying to replace all the mimeograph machines with high-tech color copiers that had mysteriously disappeared from a shipment to Albania. At MIT, he made a name for himself by transforming a large printer into a robot that hunts and eats Roombas. Professionally, he reportedly has seen the insides of more brands, versions, and generations of printer and printer-related hardware than almost anyone. Some say his obsession with paper, printing, and mechanical movement was either started by, or evidenced by, a traumatic childhood episode when he crawled inside an old Xerox 2400 and tried to print himself.

Anyway, Doc has hands on experience with stuff like printer maintenance and fleet management, but his mastery of document management leaves no stone unturned. Important issues like sustainability, security, and regulatory compliance are top of mind for Doc, as are other business technology needs like networking and IT services, making him a true blue IT renaissance man.
