And in the more-cool-resources-from-Google department, Google has formalized its dictionary offering. Although google.com/dictionary used to provide aggregated definitions for words from various dictionary resources online, it's now a full-blown dictionary tool that leverages Google's translation technology and provides concise definitions and synonyms.
Although Google's attempt to compete with Wikipedia via its Knol offering has been a remarkably dismal failure for a company that tends to get things right, this is a tool that could displace plenty of other properties like dictionary.com and answers.com. Not only does it provide a really uncluttered interface, but the extensive translation tools are quite useful. While Google Translate is useful for passages or entire sites, often ELL students simply need to clarify a single word; Google Dictionary fills the bill.
Better yet, for those of us who have adopted Google Apps, users can star words and definitions and store them in their Google accounts for reference. While this seems a small thing, like most things Google, it may lend itself to sharing and classroom use in the future as the company expands this offering.
My youngest son recently mastered the dictionary. Guide words, alphabetizing, you name it. He can use a paper dictionary. Great. Guess what? The paper dictionary can't translate the words he finds into 40 languages. It can't offer synonyms and contextual sentences faster than he can get the dictionary off the shelf. And he can't carry the Webster's Dictionary of the English Language (Deluxe Edition) that I won in a spelling bee 20 years ago in his backpack. I really should have titled this post Goodbye Dictionary, shouldn't I?

Goodbye, Dictionary.com...Hello, Google Dictionary
Google will struggle with this dictionary site just like their other sites. One reason being that Google's employees will forget about it after 6 months. The other reason being that when people think of dictionary they are going to go straight to dictionary.com.

My point is - It not good enough if a web based dictionary just gives you the meaning of the plain old English words. It has to adapt and learn to stay relevant in the modern globalized world.

Just another way for Google to expand its database
When will you learn that everything you use from Google goes towards building a bigger database on you. And that database is forever. You will regret the day you started depending on "big brother Google" for so many things.

Why don't you just put a Google logo on your blog?
And, like why do you get so frustrated that Google comes out with one good

Goodbye, Dictionary.com...Hello, Google Dictionary
I do like how Google dictionary is clean and simple whereas dictionary.com seems a bit cluttered. But for now I'd use google dictionary as a secondary resource.

Unacceptable for Education. Here's why...
That said, I'm far from impressed with Google Dictionary. Typical for Google, Google Dictionary is visually cold and uninviting. Why can't Google put just a little effort into making the graphic interface friendly? This is especially important in education, where students are fickle and used to slick interfaces from Apple and sites such as Facebook.
The absolute deal-breaker for Google Dictionary in education is its complete inability to suggest similar words. If students misspell a word (and that is the norm and not the exception), Google Dictionary simply finds no results, leaving the user with a blank screen. This is unacceptable for an online dictionary--especially for use in education.
I'm all for supporting a free product. This one, however, doesn't deserve support or use when there are a myriad of other online sites that offer a vastly superior product and are also free of charge.
Probably the next product...
