Facebook offers social media guide for US military families

By | December 19, 2011, 11:08am PST

Summary: Facebook has partnered with Blue Star Families and published a Social Media Guide for Military Families. The company hopes the guide will help families use the social network effectively.

Facebook today launched its Social Media Guide for Military Families. You can download the guide by clicking on the Resources tab on the U.S. Military Facebook Page or directly from Scribd. I’ve also embedded the 11-page document at the bottom of this article for your convenience.

The social networking giant says it chose this week for the release of the document since the holiday season can be a difficult time for military families who may have a family member deployed or are stationed far from home. Facebook hopes the guide will help families connect and share during the holidays (and beyond) by giving them tips on how best to use social media tools like Facebook.

To write the guide, Facebook partnered with Blue Star Families, an organization founded in December 2008 by military families to support other military families. The organization aims to raise the awareness of the challenges of military family life with civilian communities and leaders.

“As a former active duty Marine, I understand how hard it can be to be separated from family and friends, especially during the holidays,” Don Faul, Facebook’s Vice President of Online Operations, as well as a former US Marine and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, said in a statement. “Social media services like Facebook play an important role in the lives of service members and military families and are a particularly beneficial link between those stationed around the world and their families at home. Blue Star Families’ Social Media Guide for Military Families gives best practices and tips to help military families stay in touch every day and celebrate the holidays together, no matter where they are located.”
