Facebook Platform on Mobile comes to Android

Summary: Facebook has ported the Facebook Platform to Google’s Android, in addition to already supporting Apple iOS and its own mobile website. The company did not say what mobile OS is next.

It looks like Facebook has quite a bit of Android news today, both for users and developers. The social networking giant has announced the Facebook Platform on Mobile has arrived for Google’s mobile operating system.

Developers should be happy to know that the latest Facebook for Android version includes the company’s redesigned mobile user interface, featuring social channels for discovery and engagement with your mobile web apps. Users can discover your apps directly in Facebook for Android via Requests, Bookmarks, News Feed, and Search. Apps can also be used to acquire, engage, and monetize users with Authenticated Referrals and Facebook Credits.

Facebook Credits works the same way on mobile web apps on Android as it does for Facebook apps: it lets you provide a safe and easy way for users to pay for both virtual and digital goods. The same policies also apply to mobile web apps, including the requirement to use Facebook Credits as your exclusive payment mechanism.

Two months ago, Facebook announced it had extended the Facebook Platform to mobile, allowing developers take advantage of social channels for app discovery as well as Facebook Credits. It started with just two mobile platforms: Apple iOS and the mobile version of its website. At the time, the company said that other platforms are on its to-do list, and specifically mentioned Google’s Android. Now it’s all finally here, courtesy of Facebook for Android 1.8.

For more information, you can check out Facebook’s Mobile Documentation and HTML5 Resource Center. When you have a mobile optimized version of your app ready, make sure to add the mobile web URL to your Facebook App Settings.
