Facebook starts testing check-ins for Events

Facebook has started testing a feature that allows users to check-in to Facebook Places on a Facebook Event page. The new feature will likely boost the use of Places, which launched in August 2010, since Events is used so frequently by millions to organize gatherings.

A blue Check In button has appeared for some on Events pages when a few stars align. The user has to have confirmed they are Attending, the current day has to be the same as the one for the Event, and users have to be geographically close enough to the event's Facebook Place, according to All Facebook.

This new feature is only available on the mobile version of Facebook, and I personally could not replicate it on my device. The company often tests new features on small subsets of users before rolling them out more widely, and that's what's happening in this case. "We're currently testing this and it will be available with the next iPhone release," a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.

The new option on the Events page is just another way the social network is working to expand Facebook Places. The company has also been pushing a Facebook Deals feature that takes on Groupon with coupons for users who check-in when they're mobile.
