Man brags about evading cops on Facebook; gets arrested

By | August 29, 2011, 1:07pm PDT

Summary: Did you just manage to evade the cops on your motorcycle? Don’t go bragging about it on Facebook, like this guy did.

At 7:56 PM on Friday, the police spotted an individual recklessly driving his off-road motorcycle. Chris Gray, the Yakima County deputy, was unable to stop the individual, who used a ditch road to get away. What’s a police officer to do? Facebook to the rescue!

Several hours later, a 19 year-old man, whose name was not released, bragged about eluding two police officers on Facebook. The deputies logged onto the suspect’s Facebook profile page and noticed a photograph of his motorcycle that was “strikingly similar” to the one that eluded them hours earlier.

The suspect was rousted out of bed at 4:00 AM on Saturday by officers with a search warrant. He verified that he was the individual riding the motorcycle and cooperated with the investigation once he was shown a print out of his Facebook profile. He was arrested pending charges of reckless driving and other undisclosed infractions.

“Please be aware that there is little privacy in social networking,” Gray said in a statement. “Intelligent use of media is suggested.”

@UrNotPayingAttention Literally one of the most ignorant things I've ever read.
Lesson learned, cancel your Facebook account wink . Now if my profile is private can cops still see my postings??? if so why use Facebook??
@Hasam1991 They should only legally be able to see it if they are on your friends list or they get a warrant issued forcing facebook to allow them into your profile. Sounds like this guy was just an idiot who has his profile public.
Stupid is as stupid does.

Cops went to his house at 4 AM? When exactly did the judge authorize the search warrant?!

Ah... gotta love small town living. I very much would like to see his FB post... something like: "I outran Billy Bob Joe on my dirtbike tonight. They thaught they's g'on ketch me but I ain't skeered"

Either this particular Darwin Award nominee had his Facebook profile public or one of his friends ratted him out... there would be no other way for the cops to get that information off of his profile and I'm sure the paperwork required to get access to the information from Facebook itself would have taken far more time than the 32 hours between when he eluded the police and when they arrested him... provided they had any sort of information to go on - I'm not completely clear on this aspect but I'm not sure if off road motorcycles are required to be licensed as "street legal" motorcycles are so no license plate numbers...
