Mother apologizes on Facebook, kills herself and children

By | April 15, 2011, 12:01pm PDT

Summary: A mother drove her minivan into New York’s Hudson River, killing herself and three other children.

LaShanda Armstrong left a chilling goodbye message on Facebook earlier this week. Minutes later, she drove her minivan into the Hudson River, drowning herself, her 5-year-old son Lance, her 2-year-old son Landon, and her 11-month-old daughter Laianna.

“I’m so sorry everyone forgive me please for what I’m gonna do…. This Is It!!!!” the message read. LaShanda posted the status update on her Facebook page at 7:13 PM on Tuesday from her BlackBerry, according to CBS.

Her fourth child, 10-year-old LaShaun, was also in the van but was able to escape through a window. The lone survivor swam to shore and flagged down a passing car, giving the driver a disturbing account of what had just happened. Yesterday, the 10-year-old went to play as his family tried to keep his mind off the utter horror of Tuesday night.

“Shaun is great, he’s coming along,” said Angela Gilliam, LaShanda’s aunt. “He’s doing very good but he’s mentioned it, about he will never forget the incident, what happened. And he wishes that he could have told his brothers how to swim,” said the boy’s great grandmother Pearl Posey.

Police confirmed LaShanda loaded her four children into the family minivan Tuesday night and intentionally drove it into the Hudson River. “Before she went into the water, she managed to get into the backseat and held all the kids at once and said, ‘If we’re going to die, we’re going to die together’,” said Good Samaritan Meave Ryan.

LaShanda’s relatives say she was suffering from paranoia before the tragedy. ”She was talking to me about how she felt someone was watching her, she felt like there was pages of her diary missing the lights in her house were flickering on and off,” said Darice Armstrong, LaShanda’s sister.

“I’m still hurting. I will be forever hurting for the rest of my life,” said Datrice Armstrong, LaShanda’s mother. “I can’t hear nothing no more from them. I can’t see them no more. I can’t hold them no more. I can’t do none of that. Question is we’ll never know or understand why, but all I’m just saying is just pray with us while we go through this difficult time.”

As for "revolution" I'm glad for it. When ever people take up arms to fight for their freedom against tyranny it's a good thing. Even "IF" those tyrants or strong men did our bidding that is our shame and our stupidity/greed that put us on the WRONG side not the fault of the people who finally rose up to toss the bastards out. As for what they will do with their freedom that is a good question but it is their freedom after all and they have every right to put into place a government of their choosing weather we like it or not... That's sort of the very definition of freedom it's a double edged sword:)

Umm, if the family new she was paranoid

Why didn't they get her some help!?!? Extreme paranoia is a sign that she is suffering from some kind of mental illness and needed help.

As someone who has his share of mental illness and has a family tree filled with it, I can tell you that most people who have symptoms aren't willing to admit it, or in the case of children, their parents won't. People are afraid of the lables that come with admitting a mental illness. So they try and live their lives normally, ignoring the symptoms, untill it smacks them in the face.

If you have mental illness, or your family members, or anybody you know, don't keep it quiet. Get help. You/they will be all the better for it.

So other than the mother used Facebook/internet to leave her message, how does this possibly fall into a tech related article? Does 3M send out a cooperate memo when someone leaves a sad face post-it note on the fridge?

Don't get me wrong, the story is sad, and I feel for the family, but this not the kind of story I expect on a tech website.

This is a blog about Facebook, the story is related to Facebook, what don't you understand?
Unfortunately, I am not surprised by these things. Things are getting seriously tough for most who cannot find work in America right now, mainly because the corporations and large businesses are not making jobs like they used to in America.

That is mainly because they can send the jobs overseas where an Indian person can do it for 1/10th of the cost that an American would do it for.

incentives or benefits for businesses who do outsource written in our tax code. There was an attempt in the Senate by at least some Democrats to get rid of these incentives but it was filer busted agains some more.

25 years old with a 10 year old son? three more by the age of 25? Don't know if it was paranoia, but she sure had her share of stress.

I agree that this may not be the place for this ( ZD ), but we all need to keep aware that a little help to our neighbors now and then may help with the load.
Good points, W.E. She must have had a very rough life. Imagine, too, the days ahead for LaShaun. He has a heavy burden to carry. Can you imagine, feeling guilty not to have taught your younger siblings how to swim, so they, too, might have saved themselves? They, all, have this family's earnest prayers and heartfelt, sympatheric respect. Edeter
