Pizzeria owner IDs attackers on Facebook

By | April 18, 2011, 7:04pm PDT

Summary: A pizzeria owner who was allegedly robbed and attacked by five young men found the suspects on Facebook.

49-year-old Pasquale DiDiana, the owner of Baci Pizzeria in Chicago, was allegedly robbed and beaten up early Sunday morning by five young men. Thankfully, the victim recognized one of the suspects as his son’s hockey teammate and used his Facebook page to identify the other culprits.

20-year-old Aaron Diaz, 20-year-old Mateusz Luszczek,17-year-old Carlo Suarez, 21-year-old Arlind Nikolla, and 19-year-old Joseph Wolf, all reportedly hit the owner in the face with their fists before running off. Thanks to the victim’s detective work on Facebook, however, they have now all been arrested, according to Chicago Tribune.

The owner of the pizza parlor was beaten after he confronted Diaz and Suarez for harassing one of the other employees of the restaurant, according to Cook County state’s attorney’s office spokesman Andy Conklin. The owner called police and chased the group until he caught up to them a few blocks later near a white van.

The men began punching and kicking the victim as he fell to the ground, and one of them reached into his pocket and stole his phone, keys, and wallet. “This is what you get for messing with the wolf gang,” one of the men allegedly told the restaurant owner, according to Conklin. DiDiana suffered cuts and bruises but was OK to go home.

Diaz and Suarez were arrested on the scene, and because DiDiana recognized Suarez, he found the other three on Facebook that same night with the help of his daughter and son. All five defendants have been charged with aggravated battery and robbery in the attack, and Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. has set bond at $40,000 for each of them.

Protip: If you're a violent gang member, don't post pics of yourself on Facebook.

Quite a few criminals here in New Zealand have been placed conveniently behind bars due to having their photos on social networking sites. There were even a number of gang members on Bebo who posted tidbits about their crimes. I bet they're regretting that now ^^

@Imrhien

I wouldn't understand why that would be any worse than having family members have a picture of you.

Now, posting tidbits of your crimes is quite a bit stupid, to be blunt..... though wouldn't they have to prove that you weren't lying?

@Lerianis10 Not necessarily. They'd bring that into evidence, and then if you wanted to contest it, you'd need to testify. The question would be along the lines of "Is this your facebook account" "Is this statement from your wall?". If you answer no to those questions, they'd probably investigate the possibility of a perjury charge to add on as well. The comments also wouldn't be the sole basis for conviction. Without other evidence...

Also, that evidence doesn't necessarily need to be presented to a jury, but it is what a judge would call probable cause to get a warrant.

@Ronny102

I saw "Facebook for Dummies" books in Office Max a couple weeks ago.

I felt as if part of that title was redundant, but i couldn't decide which part.

@Bates_ At least it wasn't a one man wolfpack, a la Zach Galifinakis in "The Hangover".
...on second thought, were any of those punks wearing a satchel?

So why are we paying for the police, if you have to hunt them down yourself?

@wkulecz If I had to guess, it's probably because they don't get paid enough.

Something about this "rumble" had me thinking "jets" and "sharks". Did the wolf gang members snap their fingers and sing show tunes on their way out?

You know, I might even consider joining a gang if they could do a credible rendition of West Side Story. Not much chance of that though, I doubt you could even find a gang that had seen West Side Story; much less understood it.

Yay, some d-bags are behind bars, but they'll probably be recruited into some harder gangs now, so when they get out they'll do even worse things. I used to think vigilante justice didn't make sense, but now thanks to the cyclical nature of criminals and the system, it makes sense to hang them all (this may or may not be hyperbole).
