Skype 5.4 for Mac beta arrives with Facebook integration, ads

By | September 15, 2011, 10:53am PDT

Summary: Skype 5.4 for Mac is out. The new version adds more Facebook integration as well as ads. Are you going to upgrade?

Skype today released Skype 5.4 for Mac beta. The new version gives Mac users the same Facebook integration found in Skype 5.5 for Windows. If you’re on a Mac, you can download the beta from skype.com/go/download-beta.

Just like you can on the Windows client, if you’re a Mac user, you can now instant message your friends using Facebook Chat without leaving Skype. You will also be able to use Skype for Mac to read and update your News Feed, as well as comment and Like your Facebook friends’ posts.

To connect your Facebook account to Skype, sign in to the Skype client, click on the Connect to Facebook tab, and log in to Facebook. Unfortunately, Skype is also adding an advertising platform in this release, so unless you’re a paying Skype customer or have Skype Credit, you’ll be seeing display ads just like on the Skype for Windows client.

Skype 5.5 for Windows with deeper Facebook integration was released two months ago. Skype has not provided a release date for when the new Mac version will come out of beta.

Well it is all those silly Mac users fault, they should be using Windows. Just like Yahoo messenger has been in beta for the last several years. Why, you might ask? Maybe because the deal Yahoo made with Microsoft prevents them from producing anything more than Betas for any other OS than Windows.

Edit: Yahoo messenger was last updated for OS X on March 26, 2010. Which brings it to 3.01 Beta sad
No. It's Beta. I'll have some free time next month if they need to hire testers.

Can I choose more ads and less Facebook integration? I prefer to keep the Facebooking in the browser.

Sure, the Facebook part is optional.
I don't think so, I'll do what I do with email, use my phone.
