Update: Palo Alto has revealed a time and day for the launch: Facebook to "launch something awesome" on July 6, 2011.

Facebook is set to launch a new feature next week, possibly in the mobile or tablet arena. Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg told reporters in a visit to Facebook's Seattle office on Wednesday that the company planned to "launch something awesome" next week, according to Reuters. Unsurprisingly, Facebook has declined to comment further.

The project was developed at the 40-person Seattle office, Facebook's only major engineering center outside of its Palo Alto, California headquarters. The Seattle office has been particularly focused on the company's mobile efforts, playing a central role in the development of Facebook's unified mobile site, which was unveiled at the end of March 2011.

Speculation has hit an all-time high. Some believe it is an official Facebook iPad app, which would be the first tablet app developed by the social network. Others think it could be the recently leaked Facebook photo sharing app for the iPhone. Either of these seem plausible to me.

A few think it could be codename Project Spartan, an HTML5 platform that will take on Apple's App Store. Even less likely, but still possible, is the unveiling of some kind of integration with either Netflix or Skype, which would be awesome indeed.

Last but not least, it could be something that we haven't heard about yet. If Facebook could pull that off, it would show that the company can still develop a product without it leaking out early.

    Do we think that, whatever it is, it'll actually be a massive invasion of privacy with everyone opted in by default?

    • Do not spoil the surprize; it is going to be biggest privacy breach you ...

      @jeremychappell

      Agreed. What's awesome to Zuckerberg is usually an opportunity to further monetize users' information, not anything that Facebook users actually want.

      @jeremychappell haha.... now that was hilarious but ironically most too close to being the actual truth!

      Facebook just happened along at the right time. MySpace was totally overloaded and they had all those privacy issues and porn spam problems with child stocking thrown in for good measure. So Facebook dropped in with their Garden Walled Approach to Social Networking.

      It was and is still just a collection of nuts and bolts with no cohesive plans or goals. Along with literally no security features aside from having a login to a Cloud Based Service vs the Open Web of MySpace!

      Let's admit it, Facebook was using a revenue model that stole your info and claiming it as a sort of tax on it's services. They not making money so much off Ads like Google, but rather selling your info the highest bidder. Then the FB Privacy violations took off in force. But by then MySpace had already been left a ghost town by members flocking to FB.

      They were so fast the whole service started grinding to a near halt and people started getting wise to FB's privacy invasion scheme. So they started converting to the Google revenue model of making the money off ads. But they still keep their users locked in tight with no real privacy controls and just like Twitter, you can never really leave!

      Enter Google with their Google+ that basically fixed everything wrong with Facebook in one fall sweep! Google+ is the new FB and FB is the new MySpace!!!

        @jmwells21 Nope. I just like cheeseburgers. But what sort of sinister plan would Facebook have for a cheeseburger as it digests? Would it have some sort of tracking system that passes along my cholesterol levels to third party vendors who just so happen to have the right prescription? Would Zynga get a look at my spleen for a social gaming version of "Fantastic Voyage?" They are just absolutely nefarious!
