NASA is hosting a multi centre social media event for US citizens across its centres to preview the landing of the Mars Science Curiosity Rover on August 6th.

The event is designed to increase awareness of the landing, create buzz across social channels and to get more people interested in NASA through various social platforms.

If you follow one of NASA’s social media accounts you can register for selection at one of the locations. NASA has a presence on Twitter: @MarsCuriosity, @NASA and @NASASocial, Facebook: MarsCuriosity and NASA or Google+: NASA.

If you are selected, you will be able to meet other social media NASA fans and learn about the Mars Science Laboratory mission and the respective NASA field centre.

If you do not get selected, you will still be able to follow the event via Facebook and Google+ posts and by following the hashtag #NASASocial.

The social event may also be streamed by the Jet Propulsion Lab:

Events will be held simultaneously at six NASA field centers, including:

Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.; Glenn Research Center in Cleveland Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Johnson Space Center, Houston, Tx. Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.

Up to 30 social media followers will be invited to each NASA centres to learn about the mission. They will be encouraged to share their experience with others through their favourite social networks.

Each center will be connected via a multi-center NASA Television simulcast with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory during its NASA Social event. JPL is the lead NASA center for Mars Science Laboratory’s two-year mission.

Registration for the event opens at noon EDT on Friday, June 29, and closes noon EDT Tuesday, July 3. NASA will randomly select participants from online registrations. If you would like to register for the event, register at the centre where you would like to attend.

NASA is certainly showing its social credibility by holding a co-ordinated event across the country for social fans. By inviting select guests to attend this event, NASA is creating a group of influencers with extra connections to NASA staff and better face to face access to the event.

Opening more NASA centres gives more people access to the event. People who are not invited can also feel included through the live stream.  This is a great social initiative by NASA showing leadership in government.

Hopefully other government departments will start open up their social activities and follow NASA’s lead.
