“Smart Business, Social Business” is your first published book. After working in social media for so long, what inspired you to finally take the leap?
Well I saw that there was a sort of a disconnect in the market. There are already a ton of books on social media marketing today which cover just that – marketing. My book takes a completely different angle and starts with operationalizing social media internally first and discuss topics like governance, policy, culture, change management, technology adoption, etc.
How long was the whole process from start to finish?
The process lasted about 6 months and it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I thought, because I have been blogging for so many years, that I could literally take all my posts, make small edits and be done. Wrong. I wrote everything from scratch. The good news is that I actually learned a lot from doing this.
What type of audience is this book designed to help?
This books is for people who work in the enterprise – marketers, operations, customer support and senior leaders. It can also serve as a guide for the agencies that serve them.
I noticed that the foreword in the book was provided by Brian Solis. How did that come about?
Well, Brian is a good friend and he’s also been a mentor of mine for many years, ever since my time at Intel. He is also one of the smartest people I know so having him write the forward was the icing on the cake for me.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about the book or your other social media projects?
100% of the book royalties are being donated to Not For Sale – a global non profit organization looking to abolish human sex trafficking. As a father of two precious girls, this is something I am extremely passionate about.
Also, the book has catapulted into a variety of new projects, one is a multi-authored blog from industry professionals that discusses Social Business News from a variety of different points of view.
