JavaOne's days are numbered

This week in San Francisco is Sun’s big JavaOne conference. It has traditionally been an important event but I’m wondering how much longer it has to run.

Charles Babcock pointed out that until just a few days before the conference the keynote speakers remained unannounced. Probably because it was unclear if Larry Ellison, Sun’s new owner (unless the DOJ or HP come to the rescue) would be there. He was, he made a surprise appearance reports Lance Whitney at News.com.

Despite Mr Ellison’s late hour support, I’m not that encouraged about the future of JavaOne. I know from Sun insiders that the company has been looking to get rid of its obligation to host the conference for several years because it’s a large cost in money and time. And what’s the point? Java has become part of the day-to-day landscape of the IT world, there isn’t much to left to evangelise.

And there isn’t much about today’s Java that needs a big conference setting, which isn’t already being done online, and in small community meetings.

JavaOne was groundbreaking in its time but these days it’s reason for being has passed — primarily because it succeeded.

Oracle or not, JavaOne has run its course, imho.

I wonder why ZDNet is always putting in question the products, future and quality of technologies and companies competing with Microsoft products, prices and future.

For me seems like MS pay them lot of money in advertising.

Are you sure you know what you be 'talkin bout'?

If BIG movers and shakers like Google are supporting Google Web Tookit and Android (Java GUI on top of Linux) and Oracle's Ellison is thinking of putting together a Netbook with Linux on ARM with a Java interface, who do you think is going to be providing the value add for these endeavours?

There's PLENTY of Netbeans developers (vs Eclispe) to keep the bonfire of interest going perhaps for another 100 years or so, provided Mother Earth doesn't get hit by an asteroid.

Come on Tommy Boy! wink

Simply towing the MS/ZDNet line

Java development isn't waning. Java availability is exploding in devices
(phones, bluray) and remains the only cross platform enterprise
development solution.

Oracle announced it is to get behind Java FX is a big way propelling it
into competition with Flash as a cross platform RIA solution (Silverlight
isn't).

It is becoming farcical to compare ZDnets articles with the stream of
MS press releases and praise for unreleased products. A farce only
matched by the ignorant talkbackers like NonZealot (still waiting for
MS contributions to mobile).
