Will Google Instant distract users from ads? Has Google shot itself in the foot?

By | September 8, 2010, 5:52pm PDT

Summary: Google says search is now quicker than typing a search term. That also means less time exposing users to advertising…

Google Instant offers users a dynamic page that changes as people type letters. It forces the user to look at the suggested search phrases and also the results found.

At the Google launch, the company showed eye tracker data that showed that users were only focused on the search box and the area immediately below it. There was no action to the right of the page where Google’s text ads are shown.

Has Google shot itself in the foot with this upgrade to its search services?

About two-thirds of Google’s revenues and the majority of its profits come from the Adwords text links shown on its site. Less than one third of revenues comes from Adsense ads, these are shown on third party web sites.

Google estimates that users worldwide are saving 11 hours per second through using the “Instant” version of its search service.

That means there is 11 hours every second that is not being spent looking at search ads. Will this affect Google’s advertising business?

It sure looks that way.

  • Interesting...
I hadn't considered the reality that the Google Instant feature would detract from my viewing of Google Ads...I hardly ever view them anyway--trained to look away from them.

Although this may hamper people looking at the ads, I wonder if it could possibly lead to more people using Google to search (because of the efficiency of searching...you know, how Google began), thus justifying this with having more people see the ads, even if for a more brief amount of time.

It's great to see an advancement in the search market. Just when we thought it could get no better...

    To answer your question:

No, Google hasn't shot itself in the foot...maybe they grazed Microsoft in the thigh, but they haven't shot themselves...

    Happy Posting!!

There are no ads on the google homepage, and the adwords don't become relevant until one is scanning search results. If anything this may make the ads target better if the quality of search does improve with this feature. Go to the Google hompage and follow the logic.

Using Instant automatically takes you to the results page from the homepage and starts displaying ads. However, the ads don't seem to display while you are typing, only when you pause, so I would agree they should be better targeted. Unless you pause to read the suggestions, in which case the ads may be totally irrelevant.

But I still turned Instant off because the screen behavior is obnoxious.

    Less time on search...
The maths doesn't add up. Less time on a Google page equals less time exposed to ads. More time exposed to ads = better chance of being affected by the advertising, better chance of clicking on ads.

Also, people don't use Google to search for ads, they search for destinations and click on ads if they see them, or seem connected. The dynamic nature of the page focuses user attention on the search results.

How does one save 11 HOURS per SECOND?

Perhaps you mean 11 seconds per hour?

How many millions did they spend to save us 0.3% of the hour we were frittering away?

Perhaps it starts to make up for the seconds lost when I started having to do a global search before being able to just get Australian sites. Or is that two searches for the price of one?

I'm still a little skeptical if Google Instant will distract users from ads, but that's a very good news if it's true because those ads are actually quite annoying IMHO.

Clever observation. But other than Google, do you really think anyone cares?

  • What about Google AdWords?
    Tom:
A few of us Google Certified AdWords Partners are a little nervous on this one...I predict it will drive up impressions, hence reducing the CTR and maybe even lowering Quality scores...I know they won't kill their cash cow but this is going to screw up metrics in the short term....
