A third of iPhone owners think they have 4G, obviously don't

Summary: Think the "4" in iPhone 4 stands for 4G? Join the 34% of those participating in a recent poll. They thought the same thing.

4G, HD, LCD - there are a lot of esoteric acronyms floating around the technology world today. Which probably explains why 34% of those polled in a recent Retrevo Gadgetology survey are under the mistaken impression that their iPhone 4s are running on a 4G network - likely because of the "4" in its name.  Why that's strange should be immediately clear: Apple doesn't currently offer a 4G phone.

Not that iPhone owners are alone in their confusion. 24 percent of BlackBerry owners and 29 percent of Android owners thought the same thing. Fortunately for Apple, not having a 4G phone won't hurt its sales too much. 61 percent of current iPhone said that the lack of 4G in the next iPhone wouldn't influence their buying decision.

      • Besides, 29% Android users also think that they have 4G, while none of ...

        @athynz: ... their models have "4" in the names, except for very small percentage of users who already managed to buy actual Android 4G phones.

      100% of iPhone users think they have a modern smartphone.

      They're wrong about that too ;-)

    Seriously what are you going to do with fast internet if they are going to cap you at 2gb (most people)...

      @Hasam1991 2 gigs is the second tier. 1 gig a month is the basic $30 a month no-contract price.

  • And 29% of Android users and 24% of Blackberry users.

    When, in truth, none of them have 3G since what we have currently is kinda 3.5G to 3.9G.

    But even if you believe the 4G marketing words, I don't think 29% of Android's out there are 4G. I know the guy with the old G1 I was talking to that bragged how fast t-Mob's 4G was on his phone does not have 4G.

    • Not a single iPhone 4 can dowload faster the 3Mbps on 3G

      On the other hand all Android phones sold in the past year in the US can surf above 3Mbps.

      Sensation averages 8Mbps.

      @Bruizer T-Mobile's 4G is really just 3G. That's why I left for Verizon.

        @Champ_Kind Unless they changed this, their data is called "4G-like speeds"

  • So if these stats are correct

    iPhone users are the least educated about the capabilities of their devices. Statistically speaking of course.

      @toddybottom
      Duh, they're not techies... and that's who Apple wants to target, pretty people with $$$, techies are usually fat and broke.
      Hasam1991
      • I agree with half your post

        @Hasam1991
        Not sure why you would believe techies are ugly and broke.

        Still, I agree that Apple has targeted the least educated smartphone users and this makes total sense. The pool of uneducated users is much bigger than the pool of educated users. So these statistics merely confirm that Apple has succeeded in their marketing campaigns which is obviously a good thing.

        @Hasam1991 Speak for yourself. You're a techie (atleast I would assume so since you're always here).
