Acer's new monitor and projector auto-converts 2D to 3D

By | November 29, 2011, 7:39am PST

Summary: The Acer H9500BD home theater projector and 27″ HR274H monitor are 3D display options for the deep-pocketed.

Picked up a 3D-capable computer, Blu-ray player, video game console, camera, camcorder or even smartphone this Black Friday? You’re probably wondering how you can share your three-dimensional photos and videos with friends and family beyond your device.

If you don’t already own a 3D HDTV, you should have a look at Acer’s newly launched 3D HR274H monitor and H9500BD projector. Not only can you enjoy 3D movies and other multimedia content at 1080p full HD on both devices, you can also see get your 2D content automatically enhanced with 3D effects without any additional software.

HR274H 3D Monitor

Thanks to a chip inside this 27-inch HR274H 3D monitor (pictured above), it can convert regular old 2D content into 3D in real-time, but you need to enable this feature via the on-screen display when 3D makes sense (probably not when you’re writing an email). Unlike the Nintendo 3DS’ glasses-free stereoscopic 3D display, this Acer monitor requires that you wear polarized (also known as passive so no batteries are necessary) 3D glasses to see the 3D effects, a pair of which is included with each display. Beyond its 3D capability, this widescreen monitor offers 1920 x 1080 resolution that is good for full HD PC or Blu-ray console gaming and movie watching. At $599, this monitor-slash-gaming-TV does not come cheap; it’s available in major retailers across America now so you can see for yourself.

H9500BD Projector

For a home theater that needs to project 3D movies and games up to 300-inches diagonally  but in full HD quality, the Acer H9500BD projector (left) won’t disappoint. It supports all the latest 3D standards from NVIDIA, Blu-ray and DLP and can convert 2D content into 3D on the fly like the HR274H 3D monitor, but requires Active Shutter 3D glasses (the ones that require charging) to enjoy the effects (one pair is included). It also comes jam packed with useful ports and connectors so it can hook up to basically any 3D-ready inputs you have:

  • 2 HDMI 1.4 ports
  • DVI-D port
  • two sets of D-Sub and audio connectors
  • three RCA jacks
  • component video
  • S-video mini DIN
  • 2.5mm audio mini-jack

Available in America now for $1999.99, this 3D projector is certainly geared for deep-pocketed home theater enthusiasts who have enough dedicated space for entertainment, and won’t mind stocking up on Active Shutter 3D glasses.

What is with these tech companies and the movie industry being infatuated with 3D? Most people I know hate the technology in it's current form and it offers more headaches (literally) than pleasure.

I see 3D every day... It is called real life.

I have not cared too much for 3D offerings so far but they are showing progress. I have not seen thee products yet but I'd like to check them out. The price is not outrageous considering a 2D projector like that cost much more a few years ago. I remember an 800x600 machine that was about $3500 a decade ago. Patience.. Eventually the techniques will be closer to perfection. Time will tell.
