Ad-Aware Anniversary EditionA new version of Ad-Aware has been released, celebrating its 10th year of eradicating spyware from millions of users' systems.

According to maker Lavasoft, Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition sports more than just a fancy new GUI:

  • Uses 74% less memory than Ad-Aware 2008.
  • Only uses 18% of the CPU during scans – nearly 60% less [sic] resources than the previous version, and considerably less than each competitor product tested, including AVG, Kaspersky, Norton, and PC Tools.
  • Scans 36 MB per second – faster than each competitor product tested, and over 4 times faster than AVG’s.

As always, there's a Free Edition available for download alongside the commercial version.

I hope they brought back the ability to scan in safe mode. I kept using the older Adaware SE because it retained that feature.

  • Why are we celebrating? Its like celebrating 2 years of high gas prices.

Windows has spawned many businesses in its day and this is one i hoped would not last.

    • Malware is always going to be around

This is not a Windows centric thing.... OSX has malware
(though admittedly less than Windows, but only because
it is a niche operating system still), Linux has malware
and viruses.... you cannot just pick on Windows because
it is the dominant operating system out there....
therefore, it is going to be attacked MUCH, MUCH (repeat
40 times) more than OSX or Linux.

      • Where do you get your information?

Windows security is NOT = Linux security.

Windows security is NOT = Mac security.
Not even close. Why do you think we are even having this discussion?

You are trying to slip by with the Obscurity Equals Security fallacy.

        Here, educate yourself.

And yeah.. yeah. it's only a "trojan" - but it still doesn't mitigate the fact that if you're braindead enough to install it, you're Mac's been pwned...

That should "fewer resources". Less memory but fewer resources.

    • That's correct.

You ought to tell Lavasoft's blog, since that's a direct quote from them.

  • Yeah, yeah.. nice new interface..

But the REAL question - how well does it work? Is it better than the older versions at nailing spyware? Is it better at actually REMOVING said spyware?

I installed the free version and it installs just fine but after the restart I get an error message saying it can't load the resource manager and it just quits. I have uninstalled it and done a complete reinstall three times, using different download sites each time and still I get the same result.
