Altec Lansing Octiv 650 tries to stand out with Music Mood app

There certainly isn’t a shortage of iPhone/iPod docking stations these days, but Altec Lansing is trying to get the Octiv 650 to stand out from the crowd by being moody.

For starters, Altec Lansing promises that the Octiv 650 will transform “any space into an oasis of ambient sound and visual stimulation.” That sounds a bit over the top (and a bit emo), but it is achieved using an app called “Music Mood.” Along with a graphic equalizer, the app features several peaceful videos just as a crackling fire and a river stream to calm the user. Sounds nice enough to have on in the background when reading in the living room.

When you want to turn up the noise, the dual 3-inch full-range drivers and a 4-inch subwoofer will come into play. Along with the obvious 30-pin connector dock, there is also an auxiliary input for additional devices as well as component and composite video out jacks to transfer full screen videos to a bigger screen.

Set to be available next month in black and slate, the Altec Lansing Octiv 650 will retail for $199.95. At least the Music Mood app is free.
