For those of you trying to update the Nexus One to Gingerbread, beware. Apparently the update isn't too friendly to Google Voice.

The support page for Google Voice has a specific thread open to address the Android 2.3.3 upgrade. Basically, Google Voice app functionality is lost with the update, and the problem appears to have spread worldwide.

There is a fix found on the page that goes over installing and using an APK file, although the directions are a bit complicated...especially for something that Google should really address itself in another update.

If you have a Nexus One, have you experienced difficulties with updating to Android 2.3.3?

  • You would think that a company would make sure their updates

don't break their own software they're updating. Typical Google for you. Do they even have a clue?

      edit
after reading the thread our author left, the fix is pretty simple, download google voice from outside the market... that doesnt seem too complicated... click, install... done...

I'm an American user in London. I manually updated my Nexus S to 2.3.3 which disabled Google Voice. I could see the icon but it wouldn't load.

      I just fixed it, though:

      1) Enable Settings ? Applications ? Unknown.
      2) Download/install this old Google Voice apk from my website: http://monkeydyne.com/pub/gv.apk
      3) Find the old Google Voice app in the Market and run "Update".

This leaves you with the stock Google Voice app, enabled and runnable.

if thats complicated, I would hate to know what you think about MS office 2007 or higher... I still cant find half the crap I used to use in there....

@nickdangerthirdi@... as far as I'm aware no iPhone has ever been bricked by an update - with the exception of jailbroken ones, which is silly people not waiting for the hack.

  • What? But I was assured that something like this could never happen

I was told many times by the Android faithful that this sort of thing could not happen - of course I was told that all the Android devices would be able to run the latest and greatest version of that OS...

@athynz they can, its your carrier who is holding you back, if you got the nexus 1 you would get the latest updates as soon as they are released

@Hasam1991 Yeah, I'm on 2.2 and waiting for 2.3 for my HTC Desire, think waiting 19 months for end of contract and buying iPhone will happen before 2.3 is released :(

"problem appears to have spread worldwide."... uh, Google Voice is ONLY available in the US. So, if you have a cell phone in Canada, Zimbabwe or Outer Mongolia, guess what? You were never supposed to be running GV anyway.

Google Voice broken worldwide? Get your facts straight. It is being blocked outside of the US. It isn't broken, its working just fine. Just not outside the US.

Don't see a problem with my N1 either. And yes you really should know something about what your attempt to write an article for. GV broken worldwide. Yes, if you meant it doesn't work worldwide.

    Apple troll.

      @iPad-awan
Lol unless you want to make a call, install a 3rd party app, want to view flash, and want to video call off wi fi. then by all means pay $500 for an apple iphone its great lol

      • RE: Android 2.3.3 reportedly breaks Google Voice on Nexus One

@Fletchguy ...err virtually all the apps in the App Store are third-party. Video calls over 3G are available through a couple of third-party apps, Tango for example... and by the time your contract is up you'll probably have paid circa $500. I think your living in a parallel 'I hate Apple' universe. And if you don't like the eco-system - jailbreak. simples. Oh, and don't let your hate give you an ulcer. Enjoy the malware 'n all in your marketplace!

@iPad-awan mine didnt, still doesnt, even with 2.2 I can do more on my android than my Iphone ever thought about doing, and I can also change the battery without dismantling the phone, and having to solder a new one in...
