It's not exactly official, but if you want to step up the operating system on your Nook Color, an Android 3.0 download is now available.

Produced by a developer known only by the code name "Deeper-blue," a port of the Honeycomb SDK is available to download, install and run off an SD card. Users should be able to make full use of the touch screen, buttons, Wi-Fi, accelerometer and other functions with the new OS.

Android Central has a how-to guide on how to do this, and the actual SD image can be downloaded here. Again, this is only at your own risk as it's not an official release from Barnes & Noble.

Looks good but is it a REAL android tablet ?

    • The hardware is different than Motorola XOOM.

@Jen8 ... I'm not a tablet owner, but I have been following Androdi 3.0. The Motorola Xoom uses a dual core processor and is probably a lot more expensive than the Nook Color.

The Android software can only do as much as the hardware on the Nook supports. I could have additional programs, but you are limited by the Nook itself. The Motorolla Android Xoom won best of show from over 100 tablet entries at CES. Here is a video showing some features:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4NqT6u_ODk

If you have a backup of the Nook OS and are confident you can restore it, it's probably OK to try this, but I would wait for additional reviews and possible updates. Also, make sure you download the .iso file from a trusted source. This is important to make sure you have a secure copy that has been reviewed to insure it's integrity.

It's probably the official Android, customized to work with the Nook Color and re-compiled. It's no different than what is commonly done with Linux. (Android is Linux). Depending on the capacity of the Nook, even more could be added.

If you are not familiar with the instructions, you may have a friend who could do it for you or help. It's not difficult, but you are branching out from regular Windows operations.
