Summary: Proponents of digital education take note: Apple’s iTunes U catalog has surpassed 300 million downloads.

Apple on Tuesday announced that its iTunes U digital education catalog has surpassed 300 million downloads.

The feat took just over three years to accomplish. The catalog now counts more than 800 universities as participants, with about half of them making content available to the public through Apple’s iTunes Store.

Though the catalog includes Harvard, MIT, Cambridge, Oxford and the University of Melbourne, Apple made sure to note that it’s not just an English-speaking phenomenon: institutions in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico and Singapore all recently joined the fray.

The catalog now holds more than 350,000 free audio and video files, which are playable on a computer, iPhone, iPod or iPad.
