Apple sold 1.7 million iPhone 4s through Saturday, June 26

By | June 28, 2010, 6:00am PDT

Summary: Within three days of the live launch date, Apple sold a whopping 1.7 million copies of the iPhone 4. Despite all of the problems and hassle that went on during the pre-sale week, that’s pretty darn good.

Within three days of the live launch date, Apple sold a whopping 1.7 million copies of the iPhone 4. Despite all of the problems and hassle that went on during the pre-sale week, that’s pretty darn good.

That number includes all of the sales up to and including Saturday, June 26. Compare that to one year ago when iPhone 3GS sales topped one million in four days, and sales for the iPhone 3G reached a million in three days in 2008.

Sunday numbers haven’t been published or included yet, but basically the iPhone 4 has become the Avatar of smartphones.

Good for Apple
NonZealot Updated - 28th Jun 2010
They finally released a phone that deserves the sales it gets. Yes, it took them 4 tries and yes, they were 10 years late and yes, they had to copy everyone else to get the basics (*cough* copy and paste, multi-tasking, native apps, etc *cough*) but none of that really matters, I'll leave that for the rabid fanboys to bicker about.

Congrats Apple and congrats to every one of those 1.7 million consumers. Most of you are probably iDiots but even iDiots sometimes accidentally make a good choice. happy

you are really one of the most delusional apple haters here in geeky land. do you really think any of that hardly usable resistive touchscreen phones that you had to use with a pen, and had a horrible ui were something real people wanted to use? and no, copy and paste and multitasking are not basic features. until they are implemented in a usable way that doesn't kill your battery in an hour, they are only empty bullet points on a feature list.

i know for traditional pc folks like you it is really hard to accept: apple reinvented the phone three years ago with the first usable browser, a touchscreen that worked and an ui that blew everything out of the water that existed before (something most people would call basic features). and besides the screaming and howling of the windows mobile enthusiasts (yes, they really existed) back then, now three years later all smartphones are an upside-down and backwards, patent infringing copy of the iphone.

and now even your world has changed for the better. if it wasn't for apple the smartphone industry would still be in a deep coma.

That would be you I was talking about! Actually, I did forget to acknowledge iDiots like you in my original post so I'll rectify that now.

Thank you, iDiots like banned from zdnet everywhere, for buying truly substandard phones like the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS so that Apple had enough money to finally make a good phone. Without your blind loyalty and willingness to pay for truly some of the worst products to ever grace this earth, you will allow millions to reap the benefits of your stupidity. Apple couldn't have done it without you. And for that, thank you!

@banned from zdnet Patent infringing? Maybe you should check ALL THE PATENTS that POS apple is Infringing on to make the iPhone AKA iPhail. Their new phone is a POS, you cant even grab the sides and have it work. It still has no multitasking, no FM radio, no interchangeable battery, no CDMA support, no Open OS (meaning you can install any apps you want, instead of just those approved by Apple), and no real video chat.
I do agree that Apple did change the market 3 years ago with the iPhone, but now it has fallen behind, and will continue to do so. The only reason they sold so many iPhones this time around is because ATT let people renew early just to get it. because even they see that the future looks dim for iPhone fanbois.
@banned from zdnet Finally they sorta got it right, but 70% of those sales are to iPhone, 3G, 3GS upgraders! haha..... Woohooo.... whereas the now estimated at 200,000 Android Device Activations a day are mostly iPwned, Palm, Nokia and RIM converts!

BTW.... most people now realize that most of the parts in that iPhone 4, are made by Samsung. Apple begged Samsung to let them use their Hummingbird A8 SoC, that they had contracted w/ Intrinsity to design Domino Logic and tape out the chip, using Samsung's own chip Tape (substrate) Technology for cooler, more energy efficient processing in Apple's re-branded A-4 SoC. Of course, you know all memory is made Samsung and they supplied half of those IPS screens along with LG and the majority of other parts except Broadcom radios. That are still hampered by Apple's lone asinine external antenna invention for improved dropped call service on AT&T's fastest to drop a call network!

So Apple's part (since they didn't know how to shrink the IPS LED chips to make their Rectal IPS Screens, is in hidden features. Yet to be unveiled. The fix for dropped calls is coming in the form of a Self Stunning Gun feature. Hold it wrong, say something bad about Apple or even think wrong and you get shocked. It's a new iNazi designed control feature to go along w/ their "Thought Police" Prison Gardened Walled Network! grin

Oh.... iPhone 4 over wireless video conferencing over VOIP 3G? Well if you look back at what iChat is a program designed for use on AOL's voice and transport service network. Google owns part of AOL. Which uses the Voip engine and standards based video and voice protocols now owned by Google! lol

@CowLauncher
you continue to be utterly wrong about everything you spew about Apple

If I'm utterly wrong then I'll have to challenge you to come up with reasons why the iPhone 4 sucks and why iPhones 1, 3G, and 3GS were so much better. After all, I'm saying the reverse of that so if you think I'm utterly wrong about that, you just said the iPhone 4 sucked.

In the end you just end up calling people names.

I'm not calling people names, I'm simply stating facts based on their purchasing decisions. Anyone who bought an iPhone 1, 3G, or 3GS is an idiot. Those phones are terrible. But, like I said above, I'm glad for your stupidity. It gave Apple the capital and the time it needed to copy enough features from the competition so that it could finally release a decent product. Congrats Apple and thanks all you iDiots! happy

@NonZealot

Apple sells plastic bumper cases for 29 bucks.
Msft sells Win Mo licenses to OEMs at 15-18 bucks.

I thought that was really amusing.
happy
@Davewrite
Sometimes you guys forget that MS gets a bit of money for every single iPhone sold. What would be really amusing is if MS actually made more money from licensing Exchange to iPhone than it did on WM!

However, in the end, does it really matter?
1. MS makes more profit over its product lines than Apple does.
2. Windows Mobile has served me extremely well over the years, dating back to 2003. The amount of profit that the multi-national, multi-billion $$$/year, mega-corporation makes from the products it sells me is totally and absolutely irrelevant to me. And it should be to you too. happy

NonZealot 28th Jun 2010
But yes, it is still irrelevant to me as a consumer. Has the profit you made (presuming you've sold all your Apple shares now?) turned my MBP into something better than it was when I bought it? Of course not. Likewise, if AAPL stock were to plummet down to $20 tomorrow, would my MBP suddenly go up in flames? Again, of course not. Had you purchased stocks in a different company that was doing well, could you have used those profits to buy yourself some Apple toys? Of course.

Sometimes, fantastic products make no direct money at all, like Linux. Should you not use Linux because you can't make any money on Linux stock? Again, of course not.

I'll stand by my statement since your reply has done nothing, absolutely nothing, to address it:
Windows Mobile has served me extremely well over the years, dating back to 2003. The amount of profit that the multi-national, multi-billion $$$/year, mega-corporation makes from the products it sells me is totally and absolutely irrelevant to me. And it should be to you too.

But enjoy your AAPL profits. Maybe you should buy yourself one of those fancy iPhone 4s? I hear they are really nice! happy

Why would it get me down?

@athynz
What's the matter old boy the impending demise of WM getting you down?

Could you explain to me why I would be depressed about WM not doing well? Unlike you, I haven't formed an emotional bond with the multi-national, multi-$$$/year mega-corporations that sell me my goods. Using your logic, I should be ecstatic because I have an MBP and therefore should be dancing in the street because MY company (Apple) is doing well!!!

Windows Mobile has served me very well for over 7 years. That you would see that as depressing says more about you than it does about me. happy

I'm sure Apple will have an iPhone 4 all ready for you

Are you sure? I hear they've delayed the Canadian launch, probably because they are sold out. wink

You see, I can joke about this because I simply don't care. These are consumer goods. I buy the best consumer goods for me. It's why I've been buying Windows Mobile products. It's why I bought an MBP. It's why I buy Windows. It's why I bought a Zune. happy

@NonZealot
from your fantasy world there NonZ. Apple goes it's own way. People like yourself keep trying to compare "features" but Apple does not. Apple always starts with a rock solid foundation and builds upon that solid foundation.... Apple never tries to keep up with the Joneses, be like the Joneses, look or act like the Joneses. Apple's sales of it's products including the iPod, iPad and iPhone never depended on the "features" you've been winning about for these many years NonZ and that kills you:) A fact I so enjoy by the by.

Now as for your claim that Apple finally got it right on it's fourth attempt? You ignore the fantastic sales numbers of even the iPhone 1st gen and so forth but heck that is normal enough for you. What I don't get is you've been doing this wait for them to get it right thing with MS for decades now. Windows 1.0 to Windows 95 (If you want to be generous and give MS Windows 95 as being right that is). MS Word 1.0 World perfect and Word Star were MUCH better products. MS Excel Lotus cleaned it's clock for server versions. IE 1.0.. Netscape was in the lead for several versions beyond IE 1.0. The list for MS goes on and on and on.

Let me try to explain this concept to you. I am capable of taking on computer projects been doing it all my life in fact as a computer repair/support person it's my job. The fact is I don't want to take my work home with me so I purchase Apple products often. MOST consumers don't have my experience with technology, my knowledge, or ability. They have zero interest in a computer project or learning about a device they just want to use it. Period end of story. Don't be angry that Apple is giving these people and myself what they and I want. You have your devices that give you the ability to tinker or get under the hood and I'm happy for you. Be happy for we who don't want to go there and let it go.

Of course Apple did well!
dave@... 28th Jun 2010
iPhone sales have fallen off dramatically as we've come closer to June, just as they always do. Everyone who wanted an iPhone and wasn't naive about Apple's usual cycle didn't buy... they waited. And as with any smartphone, there are gadget freaks who demand the latest and greatest. If you're already sold on the iPhone (and yes, the vast majority of their recording-breaking iPhone sales were upgrades), you're going to want the iPhone 4. Period. No discussion needed.

As for features and Android comparisons, that's where the iPhonies need to stop drinking the Kool-Aid and listening to Steve Jobs' marketroid speak. For one, multitasking: real multitasking doesn't run your battery down. Sure, it's technically possible for a flawed app to do this. It's also technically possible for a flawed app to run your iPhone battery down, just single tasking. In practice, it never happens. In practice, my Droid not only lasts all day, but it consistently outlasts the iPhones around me. And if it did run down, and there's no USB socket handy, I have a spare battery.. no problem.

Then there's Flash... it's not just the video thing, but even there, today, in 2010, most Flash video is H.264, and it'll work exactly like H.264 from YouTube, HTML5, or any other source... it's not going to run down your battery any more or less than that. As for ActionScript code, like it or not, it's needed for a full web experience, and it's no more or less power hungry than JavaScript or other similar web technologies. Steve Jobs doesn't give a damn about your Flash performance, he just wants to shut off the demand for Flash. The real reason he doesn't want it is the usual: unlike HTML5, Flash enables a video DRM that Apple doesn't control. Jobs wants Apple to be the only entity that can sell you video for your iPhone.

And while there are many, one final thing: Android works 100% without ever being hooked to a PC of any kind (Windows, Mac, or Linux) if you don't want to dock. Everything syncs wirelessly, in the background.... and not just Google apps, anyone's can. If you want to dock with a PC, it'll dock with a PC, any kind (eg, Windows, Mac, Linux... or for that matter, another Android device).

Poor boy...
vulpine@... 28th Jun 2010
@dave@... Can't handle the fact that while Android has done some of these things first, the iPhone does it better. Can't handle the fact that iPhone users don't want Flash. Can't handle the fact that the iPhone, as yet, doesn't get malware (unless it's jailbroken.) Can't handle the fact that despite all these so-called 'features,' the iPhone is still, for now, the better product across the board.

Yes, Android phones had multitasking first--how many of them drain their batteries within 4 hours?
Yes, Android phones have higher megapixels on their cameras--how many of them tested better against the iPhone?
Yes, Android phones have bigger displays--how many of them have equivalent resolution?

And yes, Android works without ever being hooked to a PC of any kind--eliminating the ability to backup and restore--provide mass application updates--even get OS updates without draining the battery (you do know it's not safe to use your cell phone while it's on the charger, don't you?)

Nearly every one of your so-called advantages is a very powerful disadvantage. Android itself isn't mature. Google itself said that they wouldn't slow down updates until An 3.0 at the soonest, and most Android phones can't even update from An 1.5 yet. 20% of the 45,000 apps in the Android Market have been declared potential, if not real, malware. Is this really what you want from your smart phone?

As for the antenna issue...
dave@... 28th Jun 2010
... Apple needs to hire some better RF guys. It's one thing to screw up the iPhone antenna once. Maybe even twice. But every single model? You think they might have learned by now.

The easy fix, as used on many phones from companies like Motorola (with a long history of good RF designs, albeit sometimes wired to boring devices) is a diversity antenna. You have two antennas for cellular, located in different areas, and the phone selects the one with the better signal. Unless you can use MIMO, in which case they're both used, at the same time, each into its own receiver front-end.

Historically, the iPhone has been a cool enough device, but a horrible phone. My Droid on Verizon is always getting a better signal than the iPhones around me, but that you can blame on Verizon vs. AT&T, and the coverage in the South Jersey/Philly area (and around the lake in New Hampshire where I vacation, and in San Fran and the valley where I was two weeks ago, etc). But when some joker with a "free" Nokia from AT&T can talk just fine while the iPhonies around him can't keep a connection, I have a hard time blaming AT&T.

Perhaps the iPhone 4 is better than previous iPhones. But with such a history of failure here, I rather expected the iPhone 4 would be among the best smartphones at actually being a phone, just because it's natural for engineers, when they can, to over-correct for a history of such failure. I guess it's usual win of form over function... maybe you can't make a phone call, but they did make it 30% thinner.

Have you not read a single post I've made about the iPhone 4? I think it is a good phone. I'm well on the record as saying that this is the first iPhone that deserves the sales figures it is getting. Multi-tasking and finally, finally, a decent screen make the iPhone 4 a good buy. No veins popping on my forehead, I'm actually looking forward to the iPhone being released in Canada!

Maybe you are projecting your own angst onto me? You should see someone about that. happy
@NonZealot: ... "iDiots." I'll tell you something, Zealot--Apple has yet to make a bad iPhone. It may not be up to what you want in a smart phone, but by no means was it a bad device. If it had been, then Apple wouldn't have been seeing ever-increasing sales of iPhones ever since the original one. And obviously they can't all be Apple Fanbois, because every single new model sells more than the previous one--faster.

Or... Is it possible that Apple is increasing its fan base so rapidly? Could Apple be doing the impossible and generating more fans with every single new product? Nah. Couldn't be. That would end up with you being the anti-fan rather than a non-Zealot, hmmm?
