Just a little over a month after the Macbook Pro line-up got a refresh, Apple is revamping the Macbook with a longer battery life span and faster performance speeds.

Staying put at $999 (the most budget-friendly price of Apple's laptops), the standard Macbook is getting a boost to 10 hours of battery life after a full charge.

The graphics behind that glossy 13.3-inch screen will start looking better too with the integration of the new NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor, making the graphics performance up to 1.8x faster than the previous generation. The CPU is also getting a bit of an update with the 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, versus the previous 2.26 GHz edition.

The refreshed Macbook laptop is available in Apple's U.S. online store now with free shipping. Let us know if you see it pop up anywhere else around the globe.

There is talk aready of a problem with the SATA speed under certain conditions.

    • SATA issue

@Gis Bun - This one doesn't have Firewire, so it's probably slower by default.

      First off, it's "where are."
Second, it is only lipstick on a pig if the lipstick is on a pig.

What is it if it is on a troll?

so.. buying this over the Macbook Pro 13" ... you save $200. You lose 2GB of ram, backlit keyboard, SD slot, firewire, aluminum case, and have a *slightly* worse screen... I guess if $200 isn't worth any of that... it could be a good buy.

  • 10 hours... riiiight

It's unlikely a fat x86 CPU along with Nvidia graphics would be able to get 10 hrs battery life. Maybe with the system doing almost nothing and the screen set to the dimmest possible setting, but even that would be a stretch. They didn't say what procedure they used to determine that 10-hr marketing figure.

We will see when people get their hands on it for real world reviews.

@chefp The 13" MacBook Pro my mom owns averages around 8.5 hours under OS X, when it's advertised as 10. It has to do more with how everything is configured in software than the hardware itself; when you have optimized drivers for everything, it can run a long time.

Same notebook with Windows 7 or Windows Vista only has about 4.5 hours. With Windows XP, about 5.5 hours. That's with latest drivers for everything, including some non-Apple drivers (namely the Nvidia driver).

@chefp <br>You really should restrict yourself posting about things you have a clue about. They most certainly DID say what procedure they used to determine that figure. The device was decoding and playing H.264 video for ten hours straight. Nor was this particularly hard to find. If you had bothered, instead of just making stuff up.

@chefp assumes Macs are cobbled together like most PCs and it just isn't so. See www.apple.com/macbookpro/battery/
for some insights on Mac laptop battery system design. The article clearly stated how they got the battery life numbers, but of course, it will be interesting to see independent lab results

  • Maybe under *perfect* conditions

My 3-month old MacBook Pro 17" is advertised to have 8 hrs battery life. When I end all applications put it into max battery life mode and disconnect the power, the battery meter says 4.5 hours (tops!). Maybe my battery is defective or just maybe Apple likes to use theoretical numbers as actual practical numbers.

Your point being? You aren't even bothering to report your actual battery life?
