Apple has announced a new 27-inch LED Cinema Display that clocks in at 2560 by 1440-pixel resolution for $999.
I usually keep statistics like resolution out of my headlines, but for this beast, it’s all about the numbers. The 23.5-lb. unit offers 16:9 format with edge-to-edge glass display, just like the (relatively) smaller 24-inch model. Like its smaller sibling, it’s got an adjustable aluminum stand.
More specs:
- Supported resolutions: 2560 by 1440 pixels, 1920 by 1080 pixels, 1280 by 720 pixels
- Colors (maximum): 16.7 million
- Aspect ratio: 16:9
- Viewing angle: 178° horizontal; 178° vertical
- Brightness (typical): 375 cd/m2
- Contrast ratio (typical): 1000:1
- Response time (typical): 12 ms
Perhaps most noteworthy: it uses IPS (in-plane switching) technology, just like the new iPhone and iPad, allowing for a 178-degree viewing angle. (Buy two of these bad boys, stick ‘em side by side, and voila: instant home theater.)
The MacBook-friendly display (it requires a Mac with Mini DisplayPort) also includes a built-in iSight video camera, microphone and speakers, powered three-port USB 2.0 hub, and the company’s MagSafe connector. It also has an ambient light sensor, and meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements.
The new display will be available in September.
