Apple's new 27-inch LED Cinema Display: 2560 x 1440, $999

Summary: Apple has announced a new 27-inch LED Cinema Display that clocks in at 2560 by 1440-pixel resolution for $999.

Apple has announced a new 27-inch LED Cinema Display that clocks in at 2560 by 1440-pixel resolution for $999.

I usually keep statistics like resolution out of my headlines, but for this beast, it's all about the numbers. The 23.5-lb. unit offers 16:9 format with edge-to-edge glass display, just like the (relatively) smaller 24-inch model. Like its smaller sibling, it's got an adjustable aluminum stand.

More specs:

  • Supported resolutions: 2560 by 1440 pixels, 1920 by 1080 pixels, 1280 by 720 pixels
  • Colors (maximum): 16.7 million
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9
  • Viewing angle: 178° horizontal; 178° vertical
  • Brightness (typical): 375 cd/m2
  • Contrast ratio (typical): 1000:1
  • Response time (typical): 12 ms

Perhaps most noteworthy: it uses IPS (in-plane switching) technology, just like the new iPhone and iPad, allowing for a 178-degree viewing angle. (Buy two of these bad boys, stick 'em side by side, and voila: instant home theater.)

The MacBook-friendly display (it requires a Mac with Mini DisplayPort) also includes a built-in iSight video camera, microphone and speakers, powered three-port USB 2.0 hub, and the company's MagSafe connector. It also has an ambient light sensor, and meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements.

The new display will be available in September.

The HP ZR30w 30-inch S-IPS LCD Monitor at $1299 list is a nice step-up: It's a 30-bit panel with DisplayPort and DVI connectivity, and delivers 4.1 million pixels, 1.07 billion displayable colors, 2560 x 1600 resolution, and 3000:1 dynamic contrast ratio in a 16:10 aspect ratio.

  • What?

"Buy two of these bad boys, stick ?em side by side, and voila: instant home theater"

Why would I spend $2000 to cobb together two monitors as a "home theater", when I can just go out and buy an LED panel for about the same price?

@trickytom2 TOO TRUE, or a medium range projector.

Hey Jobs, stick that in your liver and excrete it out your mouth.

  • I don't understand what the big deal is about edge-to-edge glass display

It's not like it displays edge-to-edge. Why is that better than a standard bezel?

    Aesthetically superior.

  • 27"inch LED Better Value then 30"inch Cinema

I will not recommend anyone to buy Apple's 30 inch at full retail $1799 it's way to much, Apple's 30-inch will cost with tax $1972, Two 27" LED with tax cost $2172 for $200 more I can have a dual 27 inch setup, If Apple lowered the 30-inch to $1299 then that will be a better deal for me but I will be picking up the 27 inch in sept along with ATi 5870 for my Mac Pro setup
