Apple's next MacBook Air may come in black

Summary: Apple's upcoming MacBook Air refresh may be joined by a black version of the computer.

Could Apple's upcoming MacBook Air refresh be coming in black? That's a new rumor from MacRumors, which says that multiple tipsters have pointed to Apple taking the ebony route with the next MacBook Air. Of course, there's no confirmation of the rumors, but if they do hold true, it would be the first time that the MacBook Air will come in a color other than silver.

Similar to the way Apple offered the black 13" MacBook, the black MacBook Air would be priced slightly higher than its silver counterparts.

Rumblings about Apple's next MacBook refresh have been popping up fairly often over the past few weeks. Most indications point to an announcement from Apple later this month - just in time for the July release of OSX Lion.

But is a black MacBook Air something people want? As anyone who has ever owned a black gadget knows, they don't exactly deflect grease and grime.

If it's a matte black powder coat, it could look awesome!

    • Except for there is no way Apple would go to plastic after already doing ..

@jmiller1978: ... metal. And there is no paint which could be attached to metal that strongly to be actually comparable in durability of the looks of pure metal (parts of paint are always going to fall off, get scratched out, et cetera).

So it is just another ignorant nonsensical rumour.

My black, brushed aluminium Memotech MTX is still black and georgeous after 28 years, the last 12 sitting in a shop window...

You might want to research what powder coating is.

@DeRSSS Powder coat is not paint.

      • Try to scratch powder coat (still paint) and you will see the metal through

@wright_is, jmiller1978, fairportfan: ... scratches. And you definitely can not compare use of stationary keyboard-computer like Memotech MTX to use of a notebook.

Reminds me of my 1983 vintage Memotech MTX512. Black brushed aluminium. It was georgeous, back when Apple were kicking out brown plastic boxes.

I'd rather have black than "dismal" gray (silver). I don't like gray cars either. Makes me think a thunderstorm is coming. Don't like gray siding on a house either. Makes me sad & blue.

Still not even close to being as awesome looking as an Alienware laptop plus Alienware offers so much more performace for your money :D

In something as big as the MacBook Air? This I'd love to see.

  • No way

that is totally against the Jobs aesthetic of brushed aluminum for all Macs.

The Mac line has NEVER been all brushed aluminum. Ever. That includes now.
Thanks for showing that you just post to be a troll, NOT to add anything meaningful to the discussion.

Why, 'cause I typed a few words in caps to a troll?

In related news, Steve Jobs crosses the street. 1,000 articles published about the color of his turtleneck. Seriously people, it's a COLOR of a gadget... who cares?

    • RE: Apple's next MacBook Air may come in black

@Digital Video Expert As I can say with 100% certainty that his turtleneck is black I guess you have a point. But having said that a black macbook air would be snapped up so their may be repercussions for Apple share price so investors might care.

I honestly think that this is extremely important news, just like a possible white iPhone. Come on people, get real. If Dell said that a certain product would be released in black or red or whatever, no one cares. It must be an extremely slow news day. Jim

      @Jamesbruceblakley
Apple is not Dell, so what is your point?
Besides which, I suspect some people looking to get a new WinPC WOULD care, and that it would be reported in any advance story. So again, point?

  • RE: Apple's next MacBook Air may come in black

Who cares. I used to be an Apple fanboy (many years ago) then i got screwed when Jobs decided that the IIgs was cannibalising "entry-level" Macs.

  • RE: Apple's next MacBook Air may come in black

Black, Blue, Pink or White who cares as long as it is aesthetically pleasing to the person who buys it and the performance and price rock... I personally like the all aluminum enclosures and having dropped and abused many laptops my MacBook Pro's have really taking a licking and like a Timex "Keep On Ticking" can't say that for the last two or three Plastic PC's I have managed to neglect to the laws of gravity... Macs are not Panasonic Tough Books but then again they're not ugly chucks of metal either IMHO...
