AT&T has been busy reworking many of the prices and allotments of its data plans, and now it looks like LaptopConnect is about to get an update.

The leaked internal document posted above reveals the following changes:

  • The 200MB plan has been updated to 3GB of data for $35 per month
  • The 5GB plan has been reduced to $50 from $60
  • Overage charges changed to $10 per 1GB instead of $0.05 per MB

If these changes pan out, then the LaptopConnect updates follow several other new plans, such as free unlimited calling to any U.S. mobile number, 3G personal hotspots and new tethering rates.

As to why AT&T is already in the spring cleaning mood, we can't be sure. Maybe the shock of losing iPhone exclusivity really got to them, or perhaps it was time to just change things around and see if other rates work better.

How do you feel about the new LaptopConnect plans if they turn out to be valid?

What I want is to be able to buy ONE data plan, and share it among my various devices, iPhone, laptop (via tethering), and eventually an iPad. I really don't use a lot of data over 3G, and it makes zero sense for me to pay for 2 or even 3 different plans, or to have to carry around multiple devices all of which ultimately accomplish the same purpose (i.e., I have an iPhone; why should I have to also buy a 3G card for my laptop).

I understand the economics of it, that AT&T projects the costs of a "2GB" plan for an iPhone based on anticipated actual usage on one (smaller) device, and that the actual usage (and thus AT&T's costs) will increase, even if staying under the 2GB limit, when used by multiple and larger devices. So I'm fine with paying a bit more. But right now, AT&T wants to charge me $25 for 2GB per month PLUS another $30 to be able to tether the iPhone to my laptop. That's RIDICULOUS.

      @PatHMV

I absolutely agree!! We are paying for data why can't we use it anyway we want? US service providers are squeezing every penny out of customers that they can. Ripping customers off seems to be their business model.

I do like the direction that AT&T is going, but they're just not going there fast enough, and they're not meeting my own needs with these new offerings. I'd like to see them open up a 2GB plan for use on unlimited devices, including tethering, for one set rate.Simplicity is the direction that all cell phone and data plans are heading; they should get there faster.

What ever happened to the lower prices talked about when they wanted to go digital and put `10' phones in the space of '1' analog phone. We never did see the reduction of prices talked about. Now they `dime and quater' us for every thing we need such as tethering, and texting.

AT&T "customer service" and retailers don't know about the current plans, so what's the point in changing them?

I personally think that the data plans at all of the major carriers are overpriced. I personally have a Virgin Mobile prepaid wireless card and I only pay $40 a month for unlimited data service. I did have to pay $80 for the card, but I'll make that up in the savings on the monthly service, and not have to worry about overage charges. Besades that I didn't have to sign a contract.

  • I've been with AT&T...

Laptop Connect for a few years. Customer Service is good and I have a decent 3G connection at home. But 5 gigs isn't enuff if you like to download movies and stream ballgames. I'd pay a reasonable fee for unlimited bandwidth. But AT&T sez it'll never happen, reasonable or otherwise.

@neverhome Do you not have wired internet service at your house, through your cable or phone company? 3G is not nearly fast enough for me for regular internet access at home. I've never seen 3G as a replacement for a cable or DSL modem, nor has it ever been marketed as such, to my knowledge.

They're meeting Verizon's prices for laptop connect service. Not beating them, though.

The $35/3 Gig deal appears to be only for Hotspots from how I read the blurb, ala Verizon. The Notebook plan option seems restricted to the $50/5 Gig as is verizon's. But I might haave read it wrong, I suppose we shall see.

I'm looking for a plan that allows unlimited use of my cell phone and laptop nationwide. I have a wired AT&T 6.0 extreme connection at home and a separate nationwide plan for the cell phone (also AT&T).
It would be nice if AT&T or some carrier with really good coverage will offer an unlimited plan allowing me to combine these services. Any takers or suggestions? Thanks.....rocknroller7414

Just go to Sprint, the already have unlimited data and they have good customer service. With an Android phone it is easy to tether using a third party application, but if you want phone to be a wifi hotspot you have to root your phone.
