It's not definite yet, but several tech sites are reporting that the Barnes & Noble e-book reader, Nook, could start shipping as early as November 30. A release during the biggest shopping time of the year is sure to throw the eReader market into a frenzy.

PC World still thinks that we won't see one in stores or available online until December 18. But I4U (via Computer World) is reporting that there are signs with a sooner release date popping up in stores. Has anyone seen one? If the product is ready-to-go, earlier shipments would be in B&N's favor, giving customers more of a chance to purchase and ship/receive one before December 25. But with the same price as Amazon's Kindle ($260), sales could go straight down the middle.

Would an earlier release date change your purchase plans?

  • Release date wasn't my problem...

I was in the market for an ebook reader. I really wanted to purchase the Nook, and I didn't care that I would have a little bit of a wait. I liked the features, and I like Barnes and Noble. I ended up with a Sony Pocket eReader. Why? Because of early reports, which evidently B&N is at least partly to blame, indicated that the WiFi only worked while in a B&N bookstore. How ludicrous is that I thought. So I went with the Sony and the open book format it supports. Now I find out that B&N finally clarified that the WiFI works anywhere, at least according to an article I read recently. Too late for me though. I already made by commitment, and am quite pleased with the Sony. The Nook has a lot of potential though, and a lot of options. It just needs some clear marketing, IMHO.

  • Latst I've heard on the shipping date.

I was in a Barnes and Noble last week and they said they
were expecting them in this week, but when I called back
this morning to find out if they had gotten them in or
had any more information on which day they would get
them, I was told that it had been pushed back to the 30th
    again.

  • Misleading article, Nook will be at stores, and in hands of early adopters

If you pre-order early,(like Oct 20th to Nov
5th ish), you will still receive the unit being
shipped to you by Nov 30th. Its everyone else,
who wants to see it before they buy it, that
will have to wait and see. There have been
reports that the first allotment of units
available for pre-order have sold out, thus, a
later shipment date for everyone else. The
stores will have them up shortly for display,
as they were included for the first allotment
of units, Probably Nov 30th (I know I'll be
checking it out). This information is prevalent
on the web, I have been following the nook
    since launch.
This article is misleading, it makes it seem
that the nook will not be able to test in
stores, and the possibility of getting one in
your hands by Christmas is questionable. This
is actually the story of sony's daily reader
edition, which won't be arriving to the first
people who preorder it till at least dec 18th.
They are having a real hard time getting it out
in time for the Christmas Season.

    • And to miss the Christmas season...

would be such a fail. I hope for Sony and B&N that they both get it released. The more for us to choose from the better it is.

  • RE: Barnes & Noble Nook to make debut November 30?

Not exactly "breaking news" - http://twitpic.com/q1uwv - pre-
order receipt already said shipping to be "November 30, 2009"...
Ms. King could easily verify without having to rely on other "tech
    sites".
