If you own a Nook Color, don't bother with the hacker's version of Android 2.2. An official taste of Froyo is headed for this e-book reader in the new year.

According to Engadget, Barnes & Noble has confirmed an official Android 2.2 update for the colorized e-book reader that will drop in January. That includes access to the Android Market and a regular Android home screen.

So if you want an Android tablet on the cheap side of things (and one that isn't completely unreliable), look no further than this slate.

UPDATE: Looks like that confirmation wasn't really a confirmation after all. There will be an update, but just probably not in January. Here's the statement from a B&N PR rep:

B&N plans to update the OS sometime in 2011. Regarding applications, we are committed to the NOOKdeveloper program and on track to add apps to our store in early 2011, but do not have plans enable Android Marketplace at this time.

  • I bought one for a Christmas present

It's heavy for an ebook reader compared to kindle, but with a lot more capability. I am worried that Barnes & Noble will manage to f*** it up somehow, by restricting it's capability or being super-proprietary. The intentional non-support of Android market is a worrisome sign.

  • a conversation with a B&N rep April 14, 2011. read and weep

10:31:02 : Ron: Initial Question/Comment: when in April will software version 2.2 be available?

10:31:07 : System: Welcome to the Barnes & Noble Digital Chatroom.

10:31:07 : System: Jason has joined this session!

10:31:07 : System: Connected with Jason. Your Reference Number for this chat is 16712.

10:31:12 : System: Thanks for joining us.

10:31:12 : Jason: Hi Ron. Thanks for joining Barnes and Noble Digital Chat Support. One moment while I review your question.

10:31:47 : Jason: Our software developers are hard at work on the latest software update. You can expect your version of 1.2 to be sent Over-The-Air (OTA) within a few weeks. All you?ll need to do is to have your NOOK Color connected to any Wi-Fi hotspot and the update will install automatically.

    10:32:35 : Ron: 1.2 in a few weeks?

10:33:22 : Jason: Yes, that is right Ron. The current software version of the NOOK Color is 1.1. And it will be upgraded to 1.2.

10:34:52 : Ron: WOW. B&N should do a better job managing expectations. The web is saying 2.2 in April, and all they will get is 1.2!

    10:35:14 : Ron: in a few weeks.

10:35:32 : Jason: Maybe you are referring to the Android version.

    10:35:41 : Ron: YES

10:36:07 : Jason: Currently, the Android version of the NOOK Color is 2.1. Barnes & Noble policy to refrain from commenting on any specific features of any yet-to-be released software updates.

10:37:30 : Ron: the current version, available for download from the B&N website is 1.1.

10:38:27 : Jason: Yes, that is right Ron. We haven't released the version 1.2 software update. It will be released in the next few weeks.

10:38:32 : Jason: Is there anything else I can help you with?

    10:38:59 : Ron: No. Thanks.

  • RE: Barnes & Noble confirms Android 2.2 update for Nook Color (updated)

B&N should learn their terms "Mid" April means in the middle of the month, not 5 days from the "end" of it.

B&N Reps. really need to learn technical Terms! Where I work if you give a customer a date, it better be done by that date. "Mid" means middle not end.
