BlackBerry OS 7 not compatible with current phone models, RIM says

Summary: Owners of the current generation of BlackBerry phones won't be happy to hear that their phones will never see the latest version of BlackBerry OS.

SHARE:

News of device updates is, with few exceptions, good news. But when RIM announced the BlackBerry 7 OS at BlackBerry World 2011 this morning, the news was joined with a major caveat: The BlackBerry's newest upgrade won't come with support for RIM's not-so-new phones.

Instead, RIM says that the update will be available exclusively for newer devices like the recently-announced Bold 9900/9939 phones. This, the company says, is almost entirely hardware related: BlackBerry OS 7 is so dependent on the graphics capabilities of the new phones that it would be far too great a feat to run it on older, slower models.

That, of course, may sound like a whole lot of bunk to current BlackBerry owners who will miss out on the upgrade's new features, which include improved browsing, voice-activated search, and support for HTML 5 video. To those complaints, RIM will likely offer a simple solution: Pick up a new BlackBerry. Whether or not RIM customers will follow that advice is entirely up to them.

Hey, if I were Motorola and I could sneak in there and hose up RIM's big announcement, I'd do it too.

@Robert Hahn Go easy on the guy! He's new!

(In all seriousness: you're absolutely right; it's a silly slip. It's been corrected, and an internal memo has been sent out to avoid blogging before the coffee's ready.)

@chuck@...Sooner or later legacy devices cannot be upgraded with the latest software. Trying to do so can often complicate new features that could become available. That being said everything has its limit.

@striker67 ... Since when is my BB 9700 Bold a legacy device? I am in the first year of a 3 year contract. Let's get real and tell it like it is. Another example of shafting the consumer. Sounds like another company or two in the market place?

I'm going to Android when my contract expires. And then they wonder why they lose market share.

OS 6 is a real dog and considering I just upgraded to the 9870 I too will be leaving Rim for an Android phone with full Google support.

I didn't upgrade my Storm1 to OS6 because of the lackluster performance it offered. Guess I will check out a Droid after all. My contract is many months past fulfillment, and I've refrained from upgrading. Looks like that was a good reason to wait.

So OS 7 won't run on my new Torch - now that's just stupid marketing.

Had a Blackberry for 2 years and paid extra to get out of the contract. Went with an Android device and haven't looked back. Email is easy to setup complete with the Exchange Global catalog and it's free. I do not need to pay a monthly fee or setup charges. As well as maintain a BB server.

How's that Memo and Tasks sync going for you? Oh, yeah - forgot - Android doesn't support that.

@john@... Don't use any of those features. Not many people do in my company.

  • RE: BlackBerry OS 7 Not Compatible With Current Phone Models, Says RIM

Why is this such as surprise? There are the same issues with iPhones and Android phones, they don't always get the newest version of the OS. Computers are the same. Have you tried to install Windows 7 on an older computer?

    • RE: BlackBerry OS 7 Not Compatible With Current Phone Models, Says RIM

      @john@...
Yes but for example the iPhone 3G stopped at the last OS 4.2, and my wifes nigh on 2 year old 3GS is still sucking down the latest iOS4.3x updates.... It has a decent processor and graphics, and like many of the later iPod touches is still good for a few years - Indeed it is still shipping very well as a budget iPhone.

Many of the currently shipping 'old legacy' Blackberry handsets are now obselete on the shelf.

I wonder how many more will get further shafted on the QNX BBOS 8, or whateven they will call it now, when it finally does happen. I would think RIM will declare a new hardwarer standard, and everyone going forward will need new hardware.

OS6 is a dog, only works well on some models. Even new ones. RIM is SOOO far behind the curve as far as development and more and more apps aren't even being designed for the RIM OS. Android is looking better and better everyday and RIM is totally the cause for my push in that direction. I've been as loyal as I can be, but their latest marketing and development issues make it almost impossible to keep them as a preferred platform. They keep consistently shooting themselves in the foot.
