Box to offer iPad, iPhone owners 50GB of free storage

Summary: Box is bringing its generous TouchPad promotion to the iPhone and iPad.

SHARE:

iOS 5 and iCloud may only be a day old, but cloud storage service Box is already taking a shot at Apple's competing service.

Box is offering iPad and iPhone owners a massive 50GB of free storage, dwarfing the 5GB of free storage included with Apple's iCloud. Users will also be gifted with a file size limit of 100MB, much higher than its default 25MB.

Taking advantage of the offer is pretty simple: Users simply have to install version 2.4.3 of the Box iOS app and log-in.

Box began an identical program for owners of the HP TouchPad back in July. In September, Box also began offering owners of HTC phones 5GB of storage.

    Since when is "gift" a verb? I know it is used that way a lot, but it is actually a noun. Instead of saying "gifted with," say "given." The sentence should be "Users will also be given a file size limit of 100MB ...."

      @bmeacham98@... Well, knock me down with a feather. There is a literate person in the Western world!<br><br>Now I must mention the deeply illogical claim that a person ".. could care less.." about something, and the endless attempts to eliminate the past tense by using the historical present. ("It's 1492 and Christopher Columbus is leaving the Alhambra.." Wrong. It's 2011 and Columbus is dead.) <br><br>More recently, I've come across a bizarre attempt to replace the present conditional tense with (e.g.) "If he would have bought the car then.." Arrgh!<br><br>Joe_Raby: "Last time I checked, the contraction for "it is" and "it was" are the same."<br><br>There is no contraction for "it was." The contraction "it's" is always short for "it is." Worse, if you read the first "it's" as "it was" then the tense would disagree with the second use of "is."<br><br>The historical present is grammatically correct: it's just horribly overused and cliched.

      • Hmm?

        @StandardPerson

        Last time I checked, the contraction for "it is" and "it was" are the same.

        ...unless you want to use " 'Twas", which is English of Olde. ;)

      • If you're telling a story...

        @StandardPerson

        ...can you use the setting as a noun?

        In this case, the statement about "it" being a setting would be correct, and you could use the present tense, since "it" replaces "the setting". A noun can be a person, place, or thing. A setting can be not just a place, but also a time. If you want to argue logistics, space-time is considered a singular "place", what with time being just a 4th dimensional coordinate.

        @ArtemisKit
        Using "gift" as a verb is not technically incorrect, but it is tediously faddish - much like the endless use of the historical present, or writing "box set" instead of "boxed set" or ....

      @markatbox
      But it is still showing me 5 GB, not 50GB. Is it only for new users?

      @markatbox,
      Apple let you to store all your music, apps, books and photos on the cloud for free: the 5GB is for other material, such as word processing documents, spreadsheets, diagrams and email.

      My music and photography collections would barely fit into 50GB.

    So they are playing favorites only to Apple users? Note to self: Don't use Box.

      Actually for everyone it is 5GB, for Touchpad and iOS it is 50GB. I read somewhere that for Sony Tablet S, it is 50GB, but I am not sure.

      @LoverockDavidson_ Typical that you'd forget Box dot Net did this for TouchPad users first...

  • How nice that iPad users are so special.

    I guess if I don't want the glorified toy known as the iPad, I won't have a need for any serious online storage. Ok Box..... whatever. I'll keep my real computers and go elsewhere for storage.

    • So very true

      @shawkins, very true.

      So often I find myself on a train, wanting to run a Finite Element Model of bridge or a Lattice Boltzmann model of a fluid, and damn my "toy iPad" because it doesn't have the bang for such tasks.

      Like most Real Men, I need the power of a laptop to access my home petaflop number crunching system.

    Great! I don't think I would ever go over the 50GB with my iPad considering I have only used 3GB of my 16GB available, and most of that are application files.

    Terrific review! This is exactly the type of information that needs to be shared around the web. Shame on the Bing for not positioning this article higher!
