Canon UK has debuted a new device that is a bit out-of-character for the company: a computer mouse. Yes, a mouse.

Actually, this isn’t the first mouse produced by Canon as it falls within the existing X series of squeaky peripherals. But the X Mark I Mouse is extra special because it isn’t just a mouse with 1,200dpi laser sensor. The multi-functional accessory also works as a calculator and a numeric keypad. Maybe later models will cook dinner too.

With Bluetooth 2.0, this handy little device is compatible with both Windows and Mac computers. Set to roll out in November in time for the holidays, the X Mark I Mouse will not be the cheapest mouse with pricing set at £39.99/€48.99 ($65).

Not compatible with laptop's internal bluetooth
pbonnell@... 20th Oct
I bought this because I need a numeric keypad for my laptop. It enables you to switch between calculator and keypad modes. It also has a send key to insert the number into the computer. I thought it would be great for me as I do a lot of CAD work on my laptop. ONE PROBLEM, Canon's tech support confirmed it does not work with your laptop's internal bluetooth. It requires an external dongle that, of course, does not come with the mouse. MAJOR SCREWUP by Canon! Why should I have to spend more money on top of the $60 for the mouse to have something hanging out of my laptop when I already have internal bluetooth? Someone was not thinking. I returned it and got my money back.
Err, why would you need a calculator when you're sat next to a computer... I've seen keyboards with this functionality and I didn't get it then either...

I suppose having the numeric keypad might be useful if your keyboard lacks one... but those keys don't look inviting...

I guess it's just me that thinks this is a solution in search of a problem - yes?
@Jeremy-UK because it is easer to use a calculator then bring up calc if it is sitting on you desk.

Since the Czech Republic joined the EU in May 2004, it has attracted more and more investment to the country. So in 2007, is the market still viable for those searching for a Czech Republic investment property?

Totally useless, agreed, but ....

I've no idea if it would be possible. Just an idea. A keystroke to turn the new trackpad into touch sensitive keypad for calculator and number entry would be really useful. If there could be some kind of indicator on the computer screen where your finger was hovering ...

Maybe it's impossible.

Just an idea.
@johninsapporo

That's a great idea and I've actually seen and used something similar.

I had a Palm OS Hackmaster extension called TapPad that remapped the alpha/numeric input area. It split the alpha area to separate upper/lower case and turned the number area into a numeric keypad. The developer included a small plastic overlay with a keypad on it. It was a great timesaver.

The developer's name was John Brochu.
