CES 2010: Lenovo reveals 11.6" IdeaPad U1 Hybrid tablet laptop; detaches for $999

Summary: CES 2010: Lenovo’s new IdeaPad U1 Hybrid tablet PC is an 11.6-inch multitouch system that’s part laptop, part smartbook.

Apparently new enterprise- and SMB-class computers weren’t all that Lenovo had planned for CES 2010. Revealed just before the start of the show, the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid tablet PC is an 11.6-inch multitouch system that’s part laptop, part slate tablet and part smartbook.

How so? The 3.8-lb. system reportedly has a retractable multitouch screen that can unhinge from the main computer body — which houses an ultra-low voltage Intel Core 2 Duo processor running Windows 7 Home Premium — and work on its own as a slate tablet, thanks to an embedded Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 16GB solid state drive and a Linux environment.

Count ‘em: two processors, two operating systems.

The device is reported to be available in June for $999. Lenovo did say it had more tricks up its sleeve for revealing during CES 2010, so I’ll be looking for it to appear in the flesh on the show floor. Stay tuned for more coverage!

13" is the smallest screen size to go. It is doable. This will kill your eyes after 6 mos!

Why not have it act like a docking station?

The above concept, seems overly complicated...
Why not make a sub 4lb tablet, and with keeping
with the theme, it slips into the laptop casing,
which acts like a docking station.

A single processor, RAM, storage, and OS...
Probably could sell for around $850 MSRP.

Dual Processors? Can I use VMWare's ESXi to combine them into one virtual base?
Then my virtual machines on top can distribute their workload.

I think most companies are still missing the point of WHY the netbook market is so successful: price, weight, power consumption and portability are the biggest factors. This seems to be the overall "go for the money on useless features" strategy. I could get a much better netbook at about 1/2 to 1/3rd the price - so I am not sure what the "innovation" is for an 11" machine.Seems they are trying to cram a laptop/tablet pc into a netbook form factor without the price advantage.It's ironic, but the advert on the page to the right of this comment at the moment says "Dumbest things you do with your money": - seems appropriate for this device somehow.
