CES 2011

Westinghouse will be bringing its entire new line-up of LED HDTVs to CES 2011 in Las Vegas this week, including the flagship 46-inch LD-4655 LCD panel.

Measuring just over two inches thick with a high-gloss, black bezel and weighing 38 pounds total, the LD-4655 should bring a lot more power to the typical home entertainment set up. The full HD 1080p display boasts a 120Hz refresh rate, 6.5ms response time, 3D noise reduction and inverse 3:2 pulldown for film-based content.

Then, of course, there are the usual eco-friendly tidbits such as Energy Star certifications, recycled packaging and an 80-watt consumption rate (as well as only 1 watt in standby mode).

The LD-4655 will be hitting retailers this month with the MSRP of $899.

120Hz is the minimum refresh rate which can handle both 30 FPS "broadcast" and 24 FPS "film" without creating artifacts. It's nice to see this in such a large, inexpensive panel, and the energy consumption is really low.

However: Why do these designers keep building TVs with SHINY black frames? It's nearly as bad as the old "silver" ones, causing a lot of bad reflections while you try to watch the content.

It's unfortunate, but easily solved with no need for any electrical skills: Protect the edges of the screen with strips of blue painter's tape, and "fix it" with #1500 wet/dry sandpaper (available at any auto parts store.)
