iPhone nano?DigiTimes is usually a reliable first source for stories, but a curious story came online today proclaiming, "TSMC and UMC likely to receive orders for iPhone nano, says paper."

TSMC, as in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, and UMC, as in United Microelectronics Corporation, that is. DigiTimes reports that the two companies "will likely land chip orders for Apple's low-cost entry-level iPhone nano, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News reported today," with additional detail that the chip orders may come in March and "the launch of Apple's iPhone nano is expected to take place in June this year at the earliest."

Now I've made my case for how silly the iPhone nano concept is, despite rumors going back to more than a year ago. So has Adrian Kingsley-Hughes. So what's the deal?

Is this bunk on top of bunk?

America is not the ONLY market in the world, people -- wake UP! And not every market (i.e. 3rd world) can support the broadband requirements of a rich GUI environment -- but a WAP-sized equivalent i.e. Nano X Phone -- could have a big market. Currently, inexpensive iPods require a PC to manage the music, and 3rd world doesn't have a PC in every home.... give them a phone for direct downloads, and now you have a ready market niche. (Personally, I own a Nano and a PPC-phone, and won' upgrade to the iPhone or even the Touch -- the 8-gig Nano or the 120gig Classic suit me just fine.)

...or every Ned/Chav/Chavver in the UK would have one and the same for every country.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this turned out to be true, but that the orders were not from Apple, but rather Clone makers who have designed their own phony Apple product based on their perception that the market wants this product. You can buy products in China with any company name printed on them and some of them look so real that you can't tell the real products from the knock offs. And one does see products in China tht have never been released by the company who's name is printed on them.
