ORLANDO -- As expected, Samsung revealed an 8.9-inch tablet at CTIA Wireless 2011 in Orlando this morning. The surprise, however, was that pricing was revealed too.

Samsung reps got things started by bringing out the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab that was first debuted at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month. It was greeted with mild applause, but at least we got some new specs and details. After a video displaying how the tablet fits into the lives of busy people as filmmakers and freelance writers, senior vice president of product and technology, Omar Khan, covered the following specs:

  • Virtually as thin as Galaxy S 2 at 8.6mm thick
  • 4G connectivity (LTE and WiMax models)
  • HSPA+ with speeds up to 21Mbps per second
  • Dual Wi-Fi antennas
  • HD PLS display (1,280 x 800 resolution)
  • Weighs 595 grams
  • Easy grip material on back
  • 6,800mAh battery that provides up to 10 hours of usage on a full charge

The 10.1-inch Tab will also host the new TouchWiz 4.0 user interface specifically designed for Android 3.0. Some of the special features to be found in this UI include the Live Panel (a customizable home screen with content that can be easily accessed and moved), a Mini Apps Tray (i.e. Calendar, Memo Pad, World Clock, Calculator), and a social hub that integrates social networking sites (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, etc.) into a single interface for those with “on-the-go” lifestyles. Also playing up the e-book reader function, Samsung will roll out the Readers Hub that offers approximately 2,300 magazines, two million books along with numerous newspapers and other publications.

Naturally, the big news was really the 8.9-inch tablet, even though it might not really be news considering all of the hints and unintentional leaks. Sporting the same high-definition display as the 10.1-inch model, the medium-sized option of the Galaxy Tab collection weighs 470 grams and measures 8.6mm thin. It’s powered by an unknown dual-core processors, but up to 10 hours of video playback time is promised.

Samsung has been teasing today’s event with the tag line “What’s your TAB life?” Essentially the answer is Samsung doesn’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all strategy.” JK Shin, head of Samsung’s mobile communications business, said, “people expect different user experiences for different screen sizes” and “our portfolio will satisfy consumers of every lifestyle.”

Most importantly, Samsung revealed pricing for only the Wi-Fi versions of these tablets:

8.9-inch Galaxy Tab

  • 16GB: $469
  • 32GB: $569

10.1-inch Galaxy Tab

  • 16GB: $499
  • 32GB: $599

The 10.1-inch Tab will launch first on June 8, while the 8.9-inch slate is expected “early this summer.” Retail channels haven’t been finalized, so stay tuned. Also 4G connected tablets are on the way, but pricing will be “very competitive.”

Too expensive, too little, too late, lack of apps. No thanks, I'm sticking with the iPad.

@gtdworak yeah, stick with the oversized iPhone interface, its simplier and no brainer.

@pepe-el-Toro : where did you get that idea. The iPad interface is not an iPhone over-sized version.<br><br><i>Pepe el Toro es inocente... Torrriiittoo...LOL!!!</i>

Unless the app is specific for the iPad, yes it is.

Please please please, tell me that the Wi-Fi only version has also GPS. There are several offline GPS programs, you don't need constant connection all the time. I know you can tether GPS from your phone, but that drains the battery too much. This tablet looks like the first great Android tablet, though I don't like Samsung too much, but let's see.

@gtdworak Lack of apps? It's powered by the Android App Store (And Amazon App store and other versions of app stores)! I like this strategy and tiering much better than iPad.. Having a 7", 8.9" and 10" model give you a nice differentiation besides just 16, 32 or 64GB of storage...

"Lack of apps? It's powered by the Android App Store . . ."

Only a month or so ago, there were only 16 apps in the Android store that were specific for Honeycomb and large screens. Concomitantly, iTunes has something like 16,000.

@gtdworak <br><br>"Too expensive" - uh, it costs same as iPad2. It has better o/s and hardware <br><br>"too little" - you mean weight? yeah, at 595 grams, it falls just under ipad2's 601 grams.<br><br>"too late" - as opposed to what? Apple still has yet to deliver a device that isn't a locked o/s on crippled hardware. <b>Did you happen to notice the 4g/LTE connectivity?</b> you'll have to another year for an "iPad for that"<br><br>"lack of apps" - compared to what? Apple's 60k list of redundant, stupid apps like fart and calculator? Or, you mean tablet specific apps? hmm... ya know back when iPad was introduced that wasn't a reason not buy one then (or at least you idiot fanbois wouldn't accept as one)...so the same logic applies to the Samsung's today.<br><br>Once again, you and your toy = EPIC FAIL.<br><br>Are you related to Cyber, Ron B, Brick T, bizarrosteveballmer? YOu make about as much sense as that clown.

@SonofaSailor Go buy your Samsung, no one cares. Millions of iPads will sell no matter how much you cry..

      • Thanks for the laugh

An O/S that crashes routinely and a non-IPS screen is better hardware and O/S? Oh, wait, you mean it has a USB port and a 21st century floppy disk (SD card).

It's cheaper than the iPad with better specs and a real tablet operating system, not just a grid of icons.

Wow, you managed to upset a few people with your sad little assessment of a product that is very much on par with Apples offerings. you can keep your proprietary mess, I'm sticking with an open OS ;)

@gtdworak I doubt these new tabs will take over the market share that apple has already established, but the market is still young and there are may opportunities

      • Here's what will happen. People will go into a Best Buy.

They'll pick up an iPad. IPS screen that is gorgeous. Aluminum case. Quality workmanship and feel in the hand. Then they'll pick up the Samsung. Cheap plastic. Dim screen. An O/S that will probably crash on them at least once while they're playing with it. Then they'll put the Samsung back and buy an iPad. And then a 'droid fanboi will insult their intelligence.

@gtdworak its the same price as ipad? so then the ipad is also too expensive?? whats the difference if its late? dont get me wrong i love the ipad, but if it has something to offer its worth checking out.

    • RE: CTIA Wireless: Samsung officially intros 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab

@gtdworak Agree with the too little too late. But dump your pad and get the Xoom - I did and I'm a much happier camper now that I have true wireless device (unlike the ipad which requires you to connect to a pc and add content via the odious iTune$). Bigger and better screen, better cameras, better OS, better browser, better speakers, Flash (and dual led flash for camera) make Xoom/Android a vastly beter tablet. But hey, it only comes in black, lol...
