Deal of the Weekend: HP TouchPad Wi-Fi 16 GB for $99, 32 GB for $149

Summary: Dramatically discounted HP TouchPads may be the best gadget deal this year but can't seem to find them in stock anywhere? These tips from Woot and SlickDeals could help you locate a webOS tablet this weekend.

Deal alert: the webOS-running, Wi-Fi only HP TouchPad 16 GB is going for a jaw-dropping $99 and $149 for the 32 GB version as I type, but good luck finding them in stock, much less available at these amazing prices.

With HP's shocking announcement that it is discontinuing all webOS smartphones and tablets this week, you would expect huge discounts for the devices but not this quickly or dramatically, especially for the recently released TouchPads. The 16 GB TouchPad originally launched at $499 and $599 for the 32 GB model, but got $100 cheaper earlier this month in a last ditch effort to boost sales. Clearly, the TouchPads were not moving out of stores fast enough for HP even at $399 and $499, but now retailers can't keep enough stock to satisfy all the bargain hunters who are circling websites in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

[Update: HP TouchPad is already the number one search term this morning, according to Google Trends.]

According to SlickDeals and Woot, here are some of the ways you can try to snag a TouchPad at brag-worthy prices (as of 5:16 AM August 20 but keep tracking those sites for the most up-to-date developments):

  • Office Depot is offering the 16 GB for $130 (rather than $99) and the 32 GB for $150.
  • HP.com, HP Academy, Target, Amazon, Sam's Club all had TouchPads at these prices but have now sold out.
  • BestBuy.com seems to be out as well, or perhaps it really did return its unsold units back to HP?
  • Select Best Buy and Future Shop stores in Canada may still have the tablets in stock but they are definitely not sold online anymore.
  • Drop by a Walmart near you to grab one off a shelf. The discounted prices are not applicable to TouchPads ordered from its website.

While webOS does lack apps and is now an unsupported OS, but it's highly possible that developers will try to bring Android to the TouchPad, even if HP decides to not bother licensing the OS to other manufacturers. For frugal students heading back to school, the TouchPad is more than sufficient for note-taking and reading on tiny lecture tables. I doubt even the best Black Friday deal this year could beat these TouchPad prices. It's just unfortunate that it takes HP killing off its webOS operations to see the demand and interest from consumers for its otherwise decent products.

Let us know if you were able to grab a TouchPad this weekend. Good luck!

  • So it appears that the issue was not with WebOS, instead

    with the price.

Right on. Now Best Buy I think would match these prices here in US also. :-)

@Hasam1991 wishful thinking but not likely.

      • For this month that is almost certain.

        @Hasam1991

I would expect Samsung to be hardest hit by this. Many people that simply don't want an Apple product will look at $99 and jump for it. Since Android users tend to be bigger bargin hunters, this might take the wind out of Samsung's sales for 1-2 pay checks.

I informed my WalMart of the price change and picked up a 32GB!

  • There's no air in here

This is going to be Hell Week for Android tablets, and maybe even for iPads. There were probably a couple hundred thousand TouchPads in various warehouses, and they are flooding into the market at prices so low that The Other Guys will be lucky to sell anything at all until these are gone. This might be a couple of months' sales for Samsung, Moto, and the rest.

@Robert Hahn I don't get it, these damn things are worthless going forward so why buy one if not to play with.

      • Not really worthless

OK, so they don't have the promise they once did. But they come with the usual standard apps (calendar, notepad, etc.) and a web browser. 99% of the stuff you can't find an app for will be out on the web in some form. For $100, it's a steal.

@Robert Hahn yeah but you won't have any updates (and it is still buggy) and you won't have any 3rd party support if you don't get something like Android Installed.

I finally got thru around 1pm CST, I ended up getting thru using Firefox as I kept getting the VBscript error on IE. I got three of the $99 ones, which came to $297 and tax and shipping brought it up to $370 and some change. I got the email confirmation already and my card was charged. So I hope they do not screw me and cancel the order 'cause they run out!

      • RE: Deal of the Weekend: HP TouchPad Wi-Fi 16 GB for $99, 32 GB for $149

@merlinflex@... I called Office Depot yesterday and found out they actually didn't have any physical devices in stock while they were accepting orders on Saturday morning, and that they had to wait for shipment from HP so its warehouse could fill orders. Sneaky! Luckily, it looks like my TouchPad is ready for shipping and should arrive by the end of this week. So until you receive your tracking number, your TouchPad is not a done deal. Lucky for those who managed to nab one in person. Glad to hear it was easy to set up.
