Dell packs 32GB of memory into Precision M6500 laptop

Summary: Dell has announced what they say is an “industry first” with the integration of 32GB of system memory into the Precision M6500 laptop computer.

Dell has announced what they say is an “industry first” with the integration of 32GB of system memory into the Precision M6500 laptop computer.

The 17-inch behemoth notebook already boasts an Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition CPU and Nvidia Quadro FX 3800M graphics. The additional memory should especially benefit engineers and others who need to load and work with hefty data sets quickly.

This all follows the USB 3.0 upgrade and Core i5 option announced for this model earlier this year. It’s not clear yet if this will affect the current $1,899 starting price, or if it will only be available in customizable (read: more expensive) models.

The M6500 isn’t the only one getting a memory upgrade as its sibling, the Dell Precision M4500, is also getting a boost to 16GB of RAM.

@eashcraft@... Remember the OptiPlex GX270 fiasco? We are still fighting those things yeara later...
When you publish a headline like this you should include the word "Eventually". There is no such thing as an 8G laptop DIMM so the maximum memory is 16G not 32G. If if you know when the first 8G laptop DIMMs are going to be available, that would be an interesting piece of information.
And it'll all be meaningless when Dell's current quality control struggles bite this thing and it fails due to power supply or HD failures, like their current laptops are prone to do.
@ejhonda : Like every laptop manufacturer, you can only blame Dell on the choice of parts. They don't make the hard disks or the power supplies. When Apple used a defective mobile GPU from NVIDIA a couple of years ago, they were critisized for the choice - especially after they released a model with the defective GPU when they had a chance to replace it before it went on sale.

The Dell brand has suffered quality issues for the past two years. They're doing projects like this in order to try and save their brand, but like ejhonda said, when their hardware issues become apparent it's meaningless.

@wsmith@...
Just the memory?
How much heat does that Extreme edition i7 pump out? And let's not forget Nvidia has been the cause of many of H.P.s overheating dud laptops.

A gamers dream? I was starting to drool until i read "Quadro"
Maybe this is utilised because of its suitability to a business environment, but with specs like this an ATI card (at least 5670 or up) should be optional.
